Bad things are happening at multiple schools, not just this one. If it was done in front of other kids, they may have been a part of it. We don't have all the details but it is a bit fishy.

MCPS needs to go in receivership and get a complete overhaul.

I think a poster on this thread mentioned her kid was in the bathroom when it happened. May have been a fake poster, or, perhaps not.

Kids need to be held accountable and taught pro-social behavior. Ideally in the home but failing that in the schools, community and churches. Even Marion Barry championed that. Consigning kids to be criminals/gang bangers once the cuddles and cocoa stops does them no favors and is rending the fabric of society itself.

MCPS - does it have an anti-gang task force? If not, one should be demanded.

That Magruder had repeated threats in Dec and such a flat footed response last week is unacceptable. The delays and minimizing re: the call could have made a difference in the outcome for the victim, still praying he recovers. They should have drilled and been on TOP of their game.

MCPD has an anti-gang task force.

There needs to be a MCPS focus to the anti-gang task force too. Thank you for the link.

Not really surprising. They were probably in shock themselves or perhaps knew the 17 year old. Maybe they assumed one of the others kids would do it. The weird part is that they tweeted it out with names. Not like they were keeping a secret.
the tweeting shows they simply didn’t care a classmate was shot . They didn’t care there was a potential risk to other students

A bunch of sociopaths.

+1 You have to be a sociopath or completely immunte to violence, blood and gunshot wounds to think this is nbd and just tweet about it rather than tell an adult.

I would be shocked, disappointed and angry if my kid witnessed this and had tweeted about rather than call for help. My god. There is something seriously wrong with those kids who didn't report it.

It was really wonderful to see, very moving.

I also want to thank the entire student body for wearing blue and gray/white today in solidarity and support of Magruder. It really matters.

I'm not sure what your comment has to do with my post.

That’s my point. You want to celebrate the students whej it was students that allowed this to go on for hours because they couldn’t bother notifying people fricials that their classmate got shot. If this snitches get stitches attitude is pervasive at magruder then there will be other incidents . How will you feel after another incident? That’s why you should care .

That's stupid. You are going to blame 165,000 students (wearing blue) throughout the system for the actions of a few? Or even just the 1,600 that go to Magruder, including my kid? You are some kind of special for picking on kids.

Isn’t that the way it works on DCUM? All Republicans are awful because of the fringe right. All liberals are terrible because of the fringe left. All cops are b*stards because of the racist ones….and so on.
im not saying all kids there are bad. But some are and it’s being ignored . I went to magruder. Whej I went there had even my worst enemy been shot I would have contacted school officials . They just left that kid to die knowing he had been shot . There’s something severely wrong with you if you witnessed someone get shot then tweet about it but make no effort to help the victim or warn officials .

That ignores the reality that it may have been gang related and that "snitching" could have put a target on that kid. "Telling" may have been perceived to have a potentially deadly consequence for that kid. The responsibility for not acknowledging and addressing growing gang activity at Magruder and other MCPS rests with adults. The kids are just trying to get through.

Going to speculate here that the other kids in the bathroom tweeting but not reporting knew in advance about the confrontation and weren’t just kids trying to pee there between classes.

Likely. Poster from Friday who said your kid was there, care to share more?

What if the kid perceived that telling might get him targeted?

I absolutely believe this is the case. They were tweeting to let other gang members know what went down. This was nothing new to them. And they knew to shut up about it otherwise.

so gangs are cool with tweeting The name of the shooter and the victim but not okay with telling school officials ?

how is tweeting about it including names not going to wind up telling gangs the same thing ?

It is quite possibly gang related. It is not impossible to think kids may have feared being targeted. Someone posted here on Friday "we all know what happened. Snitches get stitches." Had you just witnessed someone shot, not a baseless fear.

Adults, who allowed gang activity at Magruder to grow over years and who had such an inept response despite repeated threats at Magruder in December share responsibility. A climate in which it is safe to tell is fundamental too.

Unless there are two parents posting, that parent posted in my neighborhood group. She didn't add any other information other than her student was a witness and was in the bathroom.

This.

People need to come to terms with parallel universes existing in the same space. Gang values vs. middle class values. Don't like it? Address it head on. Pulling out SROs sent an emboldenng signal but gang activity was increasing there long before.

One of the kids who did not tell adults or call 911. Perhaps out of fear of being targeted next.

I went to magruder. Graduated early 90s. While there were drugs eben drug dealers there were not gangs and even the drug dealers would have tried to get help for an injured student. What the heck is causing the decline ?

They did not want to create a risk to themselves most likely.
