One of them is lying to me - the cleaners or the neighbor

OP here. Also, the neighbor girl would be incredibly stupid to smoke in her garage.

They have a big yard. We're surrounded by plenty of treed secluded areas where she could smoke. She could have waited until the left for the day. She is alone at home most days. Why on Earth would she smoke at home?

OP here.

Maybe I should install a camera over my garage to be on the safe side.

TL;DR: Who should I trust about drug use, the reliable cleaners I've had for 5 years, or the neighbor struggling with addiction?

The bottomless well of benefit of the doubt you have for this known drug user, simply because she is white and her parents are middle class, would be embarrassing even if it weren't so easily contrasted with how determined you are to believe that the cleaners who have worked for you for 5 years with no issues have all of a sudden become a mom and daughter travelling junkie duo, simply because they're Mexican (and maybe illegal, did I mention that? I've never asked but they might be! Illegal, that is. Because they're Mexican!).

You're gross.

If they were smoking that much in the car the smell would stick to them. Did they smell like pot inside your house? If you have never smelled pot on them then your neighbor is lying. I would have never confronted the cleaners and just said "thanks for the information" to the neighbor.

OP thinks that the cleaners are smoking pot at 7:30 am but there’s no way that the very nice ex druggie next-door could be doing the same.

OP here Mexican cleaners are nice too. I just don't interact with them as much as I do with neighbors.

It's just hard to believe that the neighbor girl would be risking it with her family being at home this time of the morning. She could have waited a couple of hours when they left to work/school and smoked all she wanted to.

Honestly, I don't know what to think. People sometimes do the craziest things. I'm not taking anything off the table.

I think the neighbor’s daughter did smell pot coming from across the street, told her mom and the cleaners were embarrassed and lied. That said, I would not have mentioned it because pot is legal, they were smoking it before entering your home, and did the job they were hired to do. I assume you live with other people and they didn’t smell anything either. If these women were caring for your children or elderly parents, you would be justified in have a conversation. That should be done kindly, politely, privately and IN PERSON. No one likes to lose face and these two women live in fear of being arrested. Live and learn.

You seem stupid. They have been cleaning your house for five years and you have never suspected any of them of smoking anything in or near your house which is probably because they weren't. So now you've lost your good workers but you still have your lyingassliar neighbors with the druggie kid. Happy?

OP here. I didn't believe they would be hotboxing before cleaning, although I don't rule anything out 100%. So the scenario where a young Mexican girl was smoking weed in her car with her friends is completely out of the question? Really?

Wait, I thought you were concerned that they were hotboxing in your drive way... now you're concerned that the daughter may have been hotboxing with friends on another occasion before they arrived at your house? Smells like a troll. Added to the fact that you find it impossible to believe that a "former" drug addict is using again.

The OP has a curious disability that precludes smelling weed. She has to rely on the neighbor's daughter to detect it. Sound insane? It is.

Seems a little late for that since your cleaners have quit.

I've never had any issues with them, other than the mother cleans really well and the daughter doesn't. The daughter is not very motivated and makes this stone wall face expression when I ask her to clean something that she missed.

We've known our neighbors for 1.5 years. They are middle class family, dad, mom and two daughters, and have always been super friendly with everyone in the neighborhood and are always very nice. One of the daughters had problems with drugs until about a year ago. After rehab and a lot of efforts, I think she's off drugs now and has been living with them for a year now, taking online college classes, going to the gym, etc. I'm really hoping this problem is behind them, they're such nice people.

Our driveways are next to each other. Our garage is facing their garage. Cleaning ladies go in through the garage.

One day I was out of the house when cleaners arrived. They have a key and got in and started cleaning, as usual.

I drive up 30 minutes later and my neighbor texts me and then comes out to me and says that when the cleaners opened the car doors the neighbor's daughter smelled marijuana all the way to their garage, thought they were "hotboxing" which apparently means smoking in the car with windows rolled up. I thought surely a former drug user wouldn't confuse marijuana with anything else.

I didn't really smell anything, I have allergies and my nose is stuffed up in the mornings.

I waited until the cleaners left because I didn't want to confront them in my house. Then I texted them something like "Hey, is the car you drove here today yours? This is what the neighbors told me. I'm fine with people using it recreationally at home, but not at work or driving." They responded that this is racial profiling, this is racist, they would not do such a thing, the daughter has asthma and can't be around smoke, the mother doesn't drink, the neighbors are racist and the cleaning service is canceled because they're terrified that the neighbors will call cops on them. I think they may be illegal and that's why they're afraid, but don't know for sure.

So it didn't really go down the way I imagined it. I'm just puzzled by this bizarre incident and I don't know whom to believe.

This is funny. It’s okay to break the law and use illegal cleaners but don’t possibly break the law and smoke marijuana in the car. By the what it’s legal where I live. Not sure of where you live. I don’t do any sort of drugs by the way and do not support the use of marijuana even if it’s legal but you really has some nerve Op.

No, this has nothing to do with her being white.
I suspect they're illegal because they're terrified of someone calling cops on them.

It would be very brave of the neighbor to draw attention to herself like this and create this drama if she is the one smoking. I wouldn't do it if I were her.

Even if they have all of the proper documentation, there are lots of reasons why a person might be worried about their client potentially calling the police to falsely report them for illegal drug use and driving under the influence. Particular a Hispanic immigrant given the awful stereotypes and biases that can exist.

Again, for the 10th time. I don't care if someone smokes it. Just not at my house. I don't want any type of smoke near or at my house. It gets into walls.
