Possible to lose 10 pounds in 6 weeks?

Anonymous
I am 43, 5'6" and 160.

Alsowoukd love to lose 10lbs by Christmas. I lost 25 lbs from June to October with intermittent fasting and cutting out most carbs (especially sugars), alcohol and diet soda. Didn't watch calories or exercise.

Have stayed at 160 now for 4 weeks but I haven't been as careful and I think as soon as you add too many carbs back you lose all the benefits.

Or slash half that, and make up for the rest of the calories with workouts.

If I cut out all sugar and alcohol, ate clean at 1200-1400 calories, cardio and weights 4 times a week, do you think this is possible in six weeks?

I'm 44 at 5'6" and yes for me. I was sick at 130 after baby for long time. Just cutting sugar alone without exercise made a dramatic drop. I already keep fats on the l moderate side because of digestive issues. Cardio does nothing for me but a heavy duty pool workout using resistance training 3x well will drop me well below my goal weight. Water is a serious fat burner and with resistance I get serious muscles too.

I echo all these comments. Lose sugar in your diet and you will be amazed. Then do strength exercises. Finally, cereal and fruit for breakfast, protein for lunch and salad for dinner.

Good luck.

For the record, I'm the same age as you, OP. And I lost 15 lbs in 2 weeks this past summer and it's still off. I just did very low carb eating. Didn't even exercise.

How have you kept it off sustainably?

You probably wouldn't I trained to do international canoe races (random I know) for years and I'm naturally chubby. When I wanted to slim down I would do about 1600 a day, and maintain i was never above 1900ish- and I was doing an insane amount of training- on water 4 days a week for 3 hours each, then a run and a lifting session on off days (1 actual rest day)- but you would eat a lot more veggies than you would think, mind numbing amounts

Yeah, I would. I've tried before to do 1500 calories/fat, and after 3 days felt like I could barely stand, had constant headaches, couldn't focus at work, and was generally feeling really crappy. Eating tons of veggies doesn't do anything for me - I end up perpetually hungry.

I've always had a really fast metabolism, and though it's definitely slowed down, I'm trying to eat reasonably healthy and the most important thing to me is how my body feels - not how it looks. Lifting is helping me tone up, but I'm not too worried about the number on the scale.

Fine if you don’t want to lose weight/fat. If you do, it may just be an electrolyte imbalance.

Do Atkins if you have an event or something and don't mind gaining back the water weight when you're done. Otherwise, keep doing what you're doing.

I'm 6 weeks into my diet and down 14.2 pounds. I cut all added sugar and flour from my diet. Also eating low carb. But do note, this is a lifestyle change, not a diet. I'll add in more calories later on, but I don't want to ever go back to eating processed and unhealthy food.

A post-menopausal friend lost 20 pounds in three months on Weight Watchers. She used the app to track her food and activity. She was already someone who went to the gym a couple of times a week, but doubled that.

She also stressed that is a lifestyle change. She doesn't use the app any more, but she has internalized the decreased food intake.

Ok, for all of you that have successfully lost the weight going strick low carb or Keto, howdid it go after the fact? Did you commit to this as a lifestyle or add some carbs back in? I can commit to almost anything for 6 weeks, but I want to be able to live a more realistic life.

I did strict keto (measuring food, counting cals.) from May - August and lost about 10-12 pounds (didn't have too much to lose to begin with). I kept it off just doing lazy keto (just staying away from carbs, only tracking during the week, eating/drinking whatever I wanted on the weekends) and also a couple vacations where I literally ate anything from pasta, dessert, lots of wine everyday from August - November. I've gained a few pounds since the last few weeks as I've been eating whatever I want, plus not exercising as much.

I should add - the thing I learned from keto is understanding the difference between when I'm really hungry or just craving food out of habit and also how to manipulate carbs in my diet. For instance if I want to tighten up for a trip or an event, etc., I can cut back.

NP here and yep, that's what happens when you cut back. The way I have combated that in the past was to use glucose tabs. Chewed one or two when I had those feelings. They help you get over the hump and once you are used to the lower calories after a week or so, you won't need them.

To the PP who does the giant naysay on Keto. Listen, it works. It’s not too fun to get started, but once you are over the hump it’s fine. Besides, as long as I’m sticking to the right foods I don’t have to count calories. I think of it this way. When I’ve been indulging on wayyyyy too many carbs and gaining weight, I take a Keto break for awhile. The weight comes off fast. When I’m about 5 lbs below where I want to be, I try to start reasonable balanced eating again. That way the initial water weight is accounted for.
