Made you look |
| LOL. DCExpress doing the same scam as last year. $175 tryout prep camp. Then they'll charge $100 for their tryout. So anxious parents will be coerced into paying $275 for a tryout. |
| Best team to be a part of in the DMV. I'll pay that. |
| Look- club lacrosse is a money making venture, pay if you want. Everyone should be aware, club lacrosse pays their bills. |
|
Let's look at the club lacrosse in the DMV
MadLax--great teams over the past 10 years but their owner has had controversy repeat itself year after year. Black Wolf--very good teams and their owner has had his own controversy. Next Level--New leadership in the past few years and this group is trying to become a serious player in the club lacrosse scene again. DC Express--the new kid on the block that has joined forces with Bethesda Lacrosse Club Blue--on life support Crabs--Baltimore is too far and their owner is another character in the club world VLC--Solid program and seems to do it the right way I'd love to hear comments or more details on any of the above programs. |
Crazy feminist alert! The point of the (not me) writer was apparently that high school GIRLS (and yes at that age they are called girls) have better odds to be recruited to these recently-invented women's sports, because of far lesser competition. |
Do the kids who made the team and only attended one day of tryouts still need to pay full freight? |
| When are tryouts or spring Club & Rec teams? Are most teams usually full with returning players? New to the area and trying to figure out possible lacrosse options for our 12 year old son. |
That's mostly a fair assessment. The biggest trend in recent years is that kids in the Maryland suburbs in the younger years are more often playing in the local club programs (Next Level and BLC/DE), which has made those programs relatively better than they used to be and weakened Madlax and Crabs some because MD suburbs kids who used to go to those clubs aren't going in the younger years in as large of numbers. Still unclear if this trend will push into the high school years. Overall, it would be a stronger club scene I think if there were five solid teams rather than just three and make travel a lot easier for practices. |
Tryouts are generally in August for the club teams. If you've newly moved to the area, though, you can contact any of the clubs and sometimes they will sometimes add players mid-year. Some clubs also do separate tryouts for summer. Not sure if anyone does a full spring tryout. |
Madlax holds tryouts for every season. Also, has anybody else heard that the Lacos sold the Next Level facility to Martens? How will that affect the club going forward? |
The Lacos did not sell their facility. They sold the Next Level lacrosse program to the Mitchells with a lease of the facility for part of the time. The lease to the facility is actually shared between a few different groups who split time on the turf and in the weight room - The Mitchells for lax, Velma Black who runs the field hockey Prgram, the Brit sports guys for little kids soccer, and the guy who runs a training program for the Stoddert travel soccer kids out of the weight room. The Lacos still own the building though. Pretty smart set up for them. |
That was last year. Now, rumor has it they have sold it to Martens for a lot of money. Just wondering how that leaves Welma, the Mitchells, and everyone else who has agreements with them for use of that facility. Maybe Martens agreed for extended use before they turn it into a garage. |
In Montgomery County, it seems like NL and DCE are the best options. Few kids in that area play for Madlax anymore. BW and Madlax have decreased while it seems like VLC has surged Crabs and FCA have weakened, but still get their share of top kids. |
