They are rooted in the same racism. You don't realize it on the surface but deep down it's the same thing. You clearly don't have any evidence or official statistics to substantiate your claim that "A lot of the TJ parents here are illegally". So why did you make that claim? Ask yourself what makes you believe it? Would you make the same claim about a school whose parent body has a different more uniform racial makeup? The motivation of this 'reform' is all about rebalancing the racial makeup of the school. It has everything to do about race and nothing about academics. The existing admission policy is entirely race neutral. Any student has a shot as long as you put in the work. The new one is not race neutral because it puts a quota on middle schools, in effect controlling the racial makeup. |

The current system is certainly not "race neutral", when Asians are most of the school, and the cheating has been found at Asian prep centers. There are white people who are admitted, and refuse to attend, because they don't have anything in common with the current population of TJ. What is wrong with having the students represent the actual citizen population? NP here. |
The current admission policy is definitely race neutral. It's wholistic review with a standard test component. The test doesn't care about your race. If you work hard you will do well in the test. It's just like the process of NBA teams drafting their players is race neutral too. NBA teams don't care about your race. They draft players based on some tests about your athletic ability and reviews. The fact that NBA players are predominately one race does not mean the admission policy is not race neutral. |
Because they point to sports teams and ask why you don't feel the same way about sports (and other activities) where you are fine with the team not representing the actual student population. You cannot have it both ways, either racially balance everything regardless of merit or racially balance nothing and let merit decide. And how said is it the white kids are so racist that they will not attend a school where they are not the majority? |

| just close the school. If this is what TJ parents think, why bother funding it |
You may not acknowledge it but your are showing your racism. Do you have any official statistics to back up your claim that "too many TJ kids dealing with mental health issues"? Why did you make that claim without any evidence? Ask yourself whether you would make the same assumption for a different high school. |
It is SO hard to argue with people who don’t know what they’re talking about, but... 1) Race-blind and race-neutral are two different things. The old process was race-blind. Learn the difference and return when you’re better informed. 2) An easy way to find anti-Black resentment on these forums is to find the goons who buy into the comparison between TJ and the damn NBA. Come on now. |
I’m sorry - statistics on mental health issues? Had you ever worked in a school, you would know that you can’t report this because of privacy issues. Not knowing about TJ’s extraordinary mental health problems - which they have publicly acknowledged! - is pretty concrete evidence that you don’t know what you’re talking about. And trying to compare it to the mental health issues at other schools is just gross. |
I believe you have it backwards. The old process was "race neutral" in that it was a holistic and the admissions office was aware of your racial background and could consider it in admissions offers (this was the basis of the lawsuit against TJ by Professor Llyod Cohen). "Race blind" is where race is completely taken out of the equation and it is a decision based purely on merit. And as for bringing in the NBA, I believe the point PP was trying to make is that it shouldn't matter that a minority group is the majority if the positions are filled by merit. |
Agreed with one caveat the PP was trying to point out - the standardized test that weeded out 2/3 of applicants was race blind (not race neutral). The holistic review was only for the 1/3 that made it past the first round. |
You are not making any sense. The point is the current admission policy doesn't give any group any preference based on race. A test is race blind, race neutral, whatever you wants to call it. The new policy is not. NBA is a very successful enterprise and being celebrated worldwide. Only a racist person like yourself would view it as anti-Black. I am for the current successful NBA and its race neutral "admission" policy. I don't view them as black basketball players. I view them as the best players in the world. If you had your way on everything, NBA would adopt a racial quota and become a failure. Do you have the intelligence to get it now? |
This NBA thing is totally ridiculous. There is a HUGE amount of data available to assess each player. The team needs diversity in various skills. The analogy to TJ admissions would be to choose the 5 tallest players. See where that gets you. |
The analogy to TJ would be to have your kid practice free throws starting in 2nd grade. TJ will choose the kids who make the highest percentage of free throws. |
