"The motivation of this 'reform' is all about rebalancing the racial makeup of the school. It has everything to do about race and nothing about academics. The existing admission policy is entirely race neutral. Any student has a shot as long as you put in the work. The new one is not race neutral because it puts a quota on middle schools, in effect controlling the racial makeup." The current system is certainly not "race neutral", when Asians are most of the school, and the cheating has been found at Asian prep centers. There are white people who are admitted, and refuse to attend, because they don't have anything in common with the current population of TJ. What is wrong with having the students represent the actual citizen population? NP here.
The current admission policy is definitely race neutral. It's wholistic review with a standard test component. The test doesn't care about your race. If you work hard you will do well in the test. It's just like the process of NBA teams drafting their players is race neutral too. NBA teams don't care about your race. They draft players based on some tests about your athletic ability and reviews. The fact that NBA players are predominately one race does not mean the admission policy is not race neutral.
It is SO hard to argue with people who don’t know what they’re talking about, but... 1) Race-blind and race-neutral are two different things. The old process was race-blind. Learn the difference and return when you’re better informed. 2) An easy way to find anti-Black resentment on these forums is to find the goons who buy into the comparison between TJ and the damn NBA. Come on now.
I believe you have it backwards. The old process was "race neutral" in that it was a holistic and the admissions office was aware of your racial background and could consider it in admissions offers (this was the basis of the lawsuit against TJ by Professor Llyod Cohen). "Race blind" is where race is completely taken out of the equation and it is a decision based purely on merit. And as for bringing in the NBA, I believe the point PP was trying to make is that it shouldn't matter that a minority group is the majority if the positions are filled by merit.
