Keto: Thread for Group Starting 6 May

Claire checking in. I’m just hit 10 pounds lost. I was in the acceptable weight range, but heavy for my comfort. I’m 2 pounds away from my 1st goal.

Also, I’m really feeling great, but I still struggle at the gym.

Sia here. I am not making it. Now my youngest also got a bad pertussis and with all the stress and lack of sleep I don't have much will power... I am eating too much fruit and occasionally some other carbs, too. I couldn't make myself to fast this week but I am determined to do it today.

Sylvia here. I’m holding steady at 9 lbs down. Haven’t lost anything in a while, which is fine. I’m still tracking macros but have been traveling a lot for fun, so i’ve been enjoying wine and not watching my calories as much. And my carb count is higher some days than it should be. But i’m just glad I can do that and not gain. I still love how this way of eating makes me feel.
After next week, I think i’m going to get a blood meter and get back into full keto to lose the last 6 lbs to my goal weight.

Isn’t it so interesting that you can indulge a little and not be thrown off course? We had a party over the weekend and we both overate and drank, but all the snacks were keto reasonably keto friendly (charcuterie platter without crackers/bread, nuts, cheese crisps). I’m sure we were kicked out of Ketosis, but it was easy to get right back to it the next day and the scale didn’t go up.

Oh, I forgot to share that I subscribed to Keto Krate and my husband is enjoying the snacks, so that helps. We made a mug cake from a mix by Primal Noms (from the June box)last night and it was so good - if I craved carbs or sugar, I’d definitely be making them regularly.

Couple of questions if you guys don't mind. I was doing keto and doing great. Trying to lose 5-10lbs. And then last week I just got fed up over little to no weight loss and got my period and ate ice cream and pretzels... I think the issue is that my food was way to limited. Can I really eat Jicama fries, Parmesan crisps, and a lot of cheese on keto? I think cheese is ruining it for me, but without it I am starving.
And how much limiting do you think I really need to do of keto friendly foods? Thanks so much!

Did you download an app? I use Carb Manager and it really helps with tracking your intake. For me, the increased fat of this way of eating makes me more satiated. I’m satisfied, my sweet tooth is gone, and I don’t snack nearly as much.

You can absolutely eat cheese!

Thanks so much! I eat barely any carbs while on it. I think I was eating too many proteins. I need an app, thanks, I thought I was doing it right, but likely not. I am researching about keto and over 45. It seems that it isn't so great for women approaching 50.

Really? Why not?

I am finding many stories that women over certain age gain weight on it, and that it needs to be combined with IF to actually work for weight loss.

That somply cannot be true. Like any other diet, keto works because of calorie deficit. Those women probably gain weight because they think keto is some kind of magic where you can just exclude carbs and eat 2,500 calories. Doesn't work like that.

Maybe, but there are also many youtube videos by keto "gurus" explaining how to do keto over 40 or more. People recommend something called alkaline as keto makes us too acidic. And cut dairy, that is why I was asking about cheese, I don't drink milk or eat yogurt, you might need to avoid foods that cause inflammation.

Anyone can lost a YouTube video. There are keto personalities with hundreds of thousands of followers who aren’t rooting their content in science.

There are different flavors of keto and you probably need to try strict keto - pay attention to carbs, protein, and fat totals. 20g of carbs is your limit. Use the calculator below and get your protein goal and your fat limit.

I’m over 40 and don’t do anything extra. In fact, I do less than some - no bulletproof coffee, no MCT oils, no colleges peptides, no taking those liquid ketone things. I just eat clean, whole foods while tracking my macros.

Sorry. It’s Claire and I wrote the previous post.

Also, I’m less than a pound away from my first goal.

I forgot what name I made up. I've been doing this since early June and lost 22 lbs so far. For me lazy Keto is much easier. I don't like tracking things. I have a tendency to eat too few calories which will lower your metabolism so its been working to do a modified cheat where I go up to maybe 25-40 carbs once every two weeks or so. I lose more if I drink a lot of water for a few days.

The hardest part is going out to dinner. Italian restaurants and pizza are the most difficult. They usually have a salad but its annoying not to eat a piece of pizza.

I think this might have to do with the metabolism changes. With IF you go into starvation mode but get out of it before your body drops your metabolism. With Keto it is easy to eat too few calories once your appetite declines. Rather than continuing to lose weight, your metabolism adjusts and you stall or gain as you eat more. With IF combined, you will burn fat while you are fasting but should then be hungry enough during your eating window to eat enough to keep your metabolism up.
