I just started south beach so I’ll be following your results with interest. |
Aria, I'm Lego.
I am macro checking with Fitbit --- it doesn't check the grams but it does check the percentages. Protein definitely matters -- your body prefers glucose (carbs) but then prefers excess protein, and only will use lipids (fat reserves) if you limit the first two. But, since we all just started, I think it's more important to stick to no sugars and no grains at this point, and to try to keep carbs to below 20g (I'm doing 40g on heavy exercise days because I read that you can allow more carbs when you do heavy exercise). And try to eat fats more than protein (put butter on your steak but keep the piece of steak small). I'm thankful to Ines for creating this support group. |
Sorry -- Lego again.
I'm supplementing with this once a day: https://smile.amazon.com/Keto-Collagen-Protein-Powder-MCT/dp/B07F6MWRRJ/ It's definitely filling -- my coffee tastes like a mocha (I added in a teaspoon of half and half). I'll let you know next week if I think it's working to get me into keto. Is anyone using keto sticks? I'm not but I wonder if it's a mistake. |
Aria here. How is everyone doing today?
Had my same breakfast as yesterday but am meeting a friend for lunch and am a bit worried about what I will eat and any hidden sugars. Wish me luck. |
Ines here. Hi Greta, Lego, Aria!
Are you all tracking? I am using myfitnesspal and Im wondering if it's the best. I don't like having to measure everything but perhaps it's just the way I have to be at the beginning, at least. Good luck Aria! can you look at the menu ahead of time? Maybe this group can help. |
I'm 14:52, call me Britney. Because I'd like to have some Britney Spears abs again one day!
Last night I ditched the chicken/veg idea and did eggs in purgatory. So good. Rao's marinara is pretty low in carbs. Simmer in a pan, make egg wells, drop in eggs, let them go for about 20 minutes until they firm up, top with parm and let melt. My husband (also keto, let's call him K-Fed), said it tasted like ravioli. As far as counting macros, when I started losing the weight last time a friend commented (who lost 50 pounds on keto), that at the beginning, she just ate what's considered keto. Once she plateaued a bit (about 30 months and 35 pounds in), she was a bit more careful by counting macros. So, for me, just lazy keto for now. |
Thanks, Britney.
Ines here. I had been considering lazy keto but if the whole idea is to get your body into ketosis wouldn't it be mipotrant to keep carbs insanely low? I still think you can lose weight of course (at least I know I would given my current diet which has a lot of added sugar and esp. as I wonder about impaired metabolism related to sugar). But the other benefits - i mean wouldn't you not technicalyl every become fat adapted? |
Britney here again.
Yeah, but by eating mostly protein/veg, I'm more than likely not going to go over 50g a day. I know from past experience (so YMMV) that I'm not a person who only achieves ketosis from under 20net grams... I used pee strips (not the most reliable, I know) and was always firmly in ketosis upwards of about 50g a day. And I guess better than the pee strips were the fact that weight was coming off, even though I was eating a ton of calories. The only things I strict count are "treats/extras": so the occasional keto baked good, alcohol, carb smart tortilla, etc. and I try to keep those to less than 15g a day. I'm definitely not super strict - I'll use a ranch dressing that has 3g of carbs and a gram of added sugar (which is usually a no-no). Here's today's menu: Breakfast: Iced coffee w/heavy cream Handful of almonds Lunch: Mixed greens (spinach/lettuce/kale) with grilled chicken, cheese, hard boiled egg, broccoli, a few peppers, ranch dressing Snack: (if I need it) Pepperoni slices with cheese stick Dinner: Ground beef, lettuce, sour cream, in carb smart tortilla with roasted veg. A couple of berries after dinner if I really need the sweet. Just by rough sighting calculations, I imagine I'm at about 25-30g of net carbs today. |
That sounds delish. Huge fan of Rao’s sensitive sauce. -Aria |
I started two weeks ago, so I'm just following along for inspiration and food ideas. I'm also doing a more extreme version (PSMF). |
You can call me Isabel if you so wish. |
I'm finding that eating more fats is such harder than giving up carbs/sugar. I'm just very used to always reducing the amount of butter or oil in anything it strange to flip the other way.
1. Shrimp - saute several shrimp (I prefer to buy jumbo ones and actually chop them into large bites so you get more of the edge sauce flavor) in several tablespoons of butter with salt and pepper. You could add a splash of lemon, garlic or other spice. Serve/eat with melted better for dipping the way you would with lobster or crab. 2. Steak - season steak in salt and pepper and let sit for at least 30 minutes to come to room temp, bring olive oil to a smoking point in a cast iron skillet, sear steak, add a few tablespoons of the butter to the top of the steak (you could add some garlic in the too) and then put into a 400 degree oven. Cook until desired rare, medium, well. Let the steak rest for 10 minutes covered in foil. You can use the pan drippings and oil/butter to sauté mushrooms, asparagus. |
I’ll follow along. I’ve been doing lazy Keto since August 2018. Starting weight was 294, current weight is 227. The last few weeks I’ve had a few bad days and trying to get back on the horse.
A question I’ve been trying to get answered, maybe someone can help. Can you get into ketosis without the meeting fat requirements in my macros calculations? |
I started May 1st and am down 5 lbs. I know it’s water weight, but it’s motivating.
I’m using the Carb Manager app which has been super useful. |
I have the same question! |
