We were planning on doing the CVS or amnio b/c I'm AMA and we know we would terminate if there was a problem. But the results came back very good - 1/4,500 for downs, even less of a chance for other problems, so we decided not to do invasive testing.
The new midwives are starting in May. Not sure their names.
I love Whitney and Laura (the two midwives who do deliveries right now -- two more are coming on board as of May, but obviously I haven't met with them.) If there is any problem they can transfer you to the doctors, who will have all of your info. Overall, I've been really happy. We took a hospital tour of GW and it was very nice -- private rooms for delivery and after, nurses seemed great, etc. Good luck!
I had bad morning sickness that subsided between the 14th and 15th week.
I know lots of people who did not have any nausea in their pregnancy and did just fine. I was quite nauseous from 6-14 weeks, however.
Thanks so much everyone for the great advice! I see a couple of good options at Target. Do you know if I buy a couple of sizes online, can I take the ones that don't fit back to the store? Thanks!
I'm a 32F before pregnancy and am already a G at the start of my second trimester and will probably will go up from here. I love swimming and definitely plan on being by the pool all summer long, when I'll be in my third trimester. Any thoughts on where I could get a couple of maternity swimsuits that fit/support a large bust? Ideally I'd like to go somewhere nearby in person to try them on, but if that's not possible, then what are good options online? I've checked out Pea in the Pod, Motherhood, and Old Navy, but they don't seem to have much that is supports large-busted women. Thanks for any help you can provide!
GW told me that if the initial test results come back that there may be a problem that they will do whatever it takes to get you in for the CVS in time so you don't have to wait for the amnio. I too would get the CVS; would not be able to handle the wait for the amnio. I also see Whitney and if you are having difficulty scheduling the procedure, I'd get her on it. I'm sure she can get it scheduled. I've also heard great things about Dr. Larsen. Best of luck!

The cvs would be with dr. larsen who, combined with my kick-ass midwife, feels like the exactly right person to be doign this + the nurturing expertise of whitney = as good as this can get. the trick is trying to fit it in to the next few days. i'll keep you posted, thanks again for the positive thoughts. readign the votes of confidence on dr. larsen has been helfpul on here as well.
Another vote for the neti put. Works wonders. I used to get horrible sinus infections and using in 2x/day without fail has prevented me from having any in a year. If you're really miserable, see an ENT; I love Dr. Catherine Picken at 2440 M Street. The ENT can coordinate with your doctor or midwife. Good luck and hope you feel better!
LOVE the midwives at GW. If you are early in your pregnancy, I think it's worth at least getting on the waitlist. Is there a reason you want to deliver at Sibley? I've heard GW is great for delivery.

I am not pregnant yet, but knew that RHJ was not going to be the right delivery mentality for me, so I switched before my last annual to the midwives at GW*. Best decision I have made for my health and my family in a long time.

*Sorry that I can't give you any Sibley recs. I have a friend who just had her 2nd C-section with Foxhall (doctor would not let her try for a VBAC) - she is generally happy with her doctors, but unhappy with the Foxhall/Sibley delivery rules.
Good for you for planning ahead of time. If you are thinking about daycare, get on waitlists now, as they are generally at least a year. You do have to pay to get on most waitlists, but it is worth it, considering how much more expensive nanny care is. It costs $50-$150 to get on each waitlist, but with Bright Horizons (which are on the expensive side for wait-list fees), you get to put your name of 3 waitlists for 1 fee. Good luck!
I'm in my second trimester and preparing for my first child. At what point does it make sense to look for a pediatrician? Thanks!
oops, pressed "send" too soon. Two more points. First, if we've paid on our own for STD, the last 6 weeks of maternity week are covered by that. But those who chose not to opt into the coverage (which is not paid for at all by work) are out of luck. Second, the 12 weeks we are guaranteed to take is based on federal law, but employees pretty regularly negotiate for more (unpaid) time off, hence my expectation that I'll take at least 16 weeks off.

After that, you can take vacation time but not sick time, unless your doc says you need more than 6 weeks to recover from childbirth. We can take up to 6 more weeks for a total of 12 weeks with no problem. (My org does not have enough employees in DC to qualify for the 16 week minimum leave that DC calls for.) Having said that, I'm planning on taking at least 16 weeks if I can afford it. I don't think my child care situation will be figured out before then, and I think I will not be ready to go back to work at 12 weeks myself.

I don't know Holy Cross and haven't experience WHC for maternity care. But had non-gyn surgery there four years ago and had all sorts of problems, including when they released me too early when I was super-nauseous. The admin side was also awful and I had issues with them filling out the wrong stuff from insurance. I would stay away from WHC.
