13 weeks, 35 years old. just got call that we have an elevated risk of trisomy 13. 1:53. can either do cvs in a few days or wait 2 weeks and do amnio.
is this a done deal or is there still hope? anyone gone through this and chosen cvs and then had a complication? is 2 weeks less of uncertainty worth the additional risk? |
Go with the CVS, but you may be past the cutoff. I've been there! Had a CVS, and was able to lay all my worries to rest. |
Of course it's not a done deal! Odds are in your favor. You need to decide the risk question yourself though. Fwiw I'd do CVS because I wouldn't be able to handle 2 weeks plus time to analyze results with amnio. |
thanks, we're trying to schedule the cvs in the next few days. i'm totally risk averse having had a miscariage a few years ago but i honestly don't think i can wait 3 weeks to know the outcome. especially on trisomy 13 when we'd definately terminate. |
REMEMBER it's 52/53 that all is ok!! |
My two cents - do the CVS ASAP with someone you can really trust (ie: proven reliable track record and done hundreds of them).
I agree with a PP, I'd want an answer straight away, not waiting for the amnio and these days a CVS is just as safe as amnio with the RIGHT provider. Your odds are NOT a done deal, loads of threads on here verify this that many woman have had similar or even worse odds than that and come away from the CVS or amnio knowing they had a baby without genetic problems! As easy as this is to say and as hard as it is to do in practice, try to keep breathing and do let us know how it turns out. Hope you can get your pain free, problem free CVS done asap and most of all that you have a great result! |
op here, thanks everyone for the feedback. The cvs would be with dr. larsen who, combined with my kick-ass midwife, feels like the exactly right person to be doign this + the nurturing expertise of whitney = as good as this can get. the trick is trying to fit it in to the next few days. i'll keep you posted, thanks again for the positive thoughts. readign the votes of confidence on dr. larsen has been helfpul on here as well. |
I agree -- do the CVS ASAP. You don't want to be worrying like this for over two weeks. I had a 1/25 for down syndrome a few years back. They did a CVS for me at almost 14 weeks, so it's not too late. Everything turned out just fine, so there definitely is hope. The odds are in your favor, although I know it doesn't feel like it. Hang in there -- I remember so clearly how hard this was. The time I spent waiting for the results were some of the hardest days I've ever had. |
Remember, a 1 in 53 chance of problems means a 98.11% chance that everything's okay. If you were planning a picnic and had a 98.11% chance of sun, would you be losing sleep over the possibility of rain? Obviously this is stressful and scary, but the odds really are in your favor. |
GW told me that if the initial test results come back that there may be a problem that they will do whatever it takes to get you in for the CVS in time so you don't have to wait for the amnio. I too would get the CVS; would not be able to handle the wait for the amnio. I also see Whitney and if you are having difficulty scheduling the procedure, I'd get her on it. I'm sure she can get it scheduled. I've also heard great things about Dr. Larsen. Best of luck!

yup whitney + larsen = awesome. we got it scheduled for friday and dh opted to skip important work trip on his own accord. thanks for small blessings. thanks for all the feedback and positive thoughts. |
If it makes you feel any better, I had a 1 in 30 result on my NT scan with my first baby. He's 2 years now and there's not a thing wrong with him. |
Odds are still way in your favor. That being said, do the CVS. If you might even consider terminating if you get bad results, you definitely don't want to wait another few weeks for the amnio. |
I was given odds of 1in 2 (based on the NT alone) and immediately did a CVS. My now 3-year old is just fine. I would do the CVS, but all is not doomed. |
New poster in the same boat - 1:56 for a problem. Had CVS done within a few days, and it came back negative. The days in between were very difficult, but the test and associated risk was worth it for us, and I would do it again. |
