Newly pregnant with #2 and I don't remember this thick, mucousy congestiong with preg #1. Probably because it was a different time of year - and now, I have terrible allergies and don't really take anything for them.
But the morning (and all day) congestion is a killer. I constantly gag on it. I know mucinex is safe to take, but I haven't had much luck after a couple of tries. What else is working for you moms? |
If you have really bad allergies, why not check with your OB and see if they recommend something safe you can take? For me, uncontrolled bad allergies = inevitable sinus infection. Try the extra-strength Mucinex (not generic, which doesn't last as long) and a sinus rinse like the netipot |
My allergies have turned into a sinus infection and it's pretty awful. I've been trying everything. My OB said that sudafed is safe (I know others feel differently) so I've been taking that when I just can't handle it. I've been doing the saline rinse, using a humidifier, taking hot showers and then sitting in the bathroom for a while, drinking a huge amount of water, and using Vicks Vaporub. It just got to a point where I didn't sleep for 3 nights and I was losing my mind. Good luck. |
Most OBs don't consider the brand-name Mucinex extended release to be safe. Stick with the generic to play it safe, it's a few more pills every day, but what's convenience over safety? (but do keep taking it). I'm taking it myself pretty much every day. |
A second for the neti pot. Takes some getting used to but may help. I had terrible sinus congestion just months before I had my kids -- it will go away but rest as much as possible -- it's horrible to try to sleep at night with all the swelling in the sinuses.
My doc had suggested propping up on pillows because the situation is worse if you sleep flat on your back. |
My strategy has been: allergy meds (zyrtec is class B), breathe right strips (a life saver!), humidifier, air purifier, and a little guaifenesin. Sometimes I rinse my sinuses with saline solution.
To be honest, though, I usually have such horrible congestion from allergies, this year (3rd trimester) feels like a relief! |
I saw a high-risk OB and they were the ones who suggested I take it. You need to ask your doc what they feel is safe and best for you. btw, I can't imagine any doctor saying it's okay to take Mucinex (generic or brand) everyday. It's a class C drug and should only be used when you really need it. |
I have never had allergies before but I've been congested and coughing for 2-3 months now and I'm 37 weeks along. The past two weeks its gotten to the point that I'm nauseous and throw up at least every other day! My midwife suggested Clarinex, Zyrtec, or Sudafed. She also said I could take Mucinex-d. So this week I started with Clarinex once a day, Mucinex-d twice a day, and neti-pot 2-3 times a day. I'm hoping that things are better in the next day or two so I can stop taking the Mucinex-d. |
Claritin and plain saline nasal spray. Works for me. |
I've had an OB in another major city and two here (plus my friend's OB in NYC) tell me that Claritin D is safe. I have taken it sparingly throughout my pregnancy. Other than that, I am stuffed up as can be. It sucks!!!! |
I've been using Claritin D pretty regularly - OB said it was fine. |
Claritin & Zyrtec are fine, but not with a decongestant. Neti pot is great but ultimately it is the increased blood volume doing it, inflaming your sinuses. Breathe Right strips are a lifesaver. Mucinex is more for chest congestion but check with your OB as it may elevate your BP. |
I am the one who has had three OBs in three different cities tell me that Claritin D (specifically the D) is okay. |
You can use sudafed and benadryl, that's what I've been using when i'm desperate. Otherwise, I sleep sittting up until my butt hurts... |
