Any AMA expectant moms NOT doing CVS or amnio?

I'm having a first trimester screen and then potentially a CVS. I'm really scared about having a CVS but I feel like my blood screen/ultrasound results will be poor no matter what once my age is factored in.

Your first trimester screening results will probably not be elevated just based on your age. I am 38 and i can't remember what my age risk was (1/100 or something) but my Down syndrome risk after the final came out to be like 1/2000. I was planning to do CVS if they were abnormal and right now am thinking about whether or not I even want to do amniocentesis. I may do the sequential screening at 15 weeks to help decide.

I was 39 when I had DS and I took a pass on both. I did have the various screenings with good results. I would have considered an amnio if the screening had shown increase risk or if ther had been any soft markers.

I was AMA for two pregnancies and just want to say that I highly recommend CVS. It was a great experience overall - has given both me and my husband enormous peace of mind so we could enjoy these pregnancies. Bonus for finding out sex by 13 weeks!

If you do it, schedule with Dr. Stern in Fairfax. The best, most experienced CVS practitioner, and also a super nice guy.

I know quite a few AMA moms who didn't do those tests. My one friend had her first at 35 and didn't do the nuchal screen, but did do the non-invasive quad screen at 16 weeks. When she had her second two years later she got the nuchal screen.

I loved the nuchal screen with my first - I was a youngin' at 32 and had great results. But I'm 35 with this one and am 99% sure I'm getting the amnio. Will discuss at my first appointment. I've been reading about the CVS and it seems like the risks are still really small but I think given that I'm not 40 and we have no known issues I may opt for the amnio. I just wish it could be done earlier.

I am AMA, did the nuchal screen combined with blood work. I would have gone for CVS or amnio if the results were alarming, but the miscarriage stats for cvs and amnio were higher than those given by my nt scan (with age factored in) so we opted against further testing.

I am the 20:20 poster. The miscarriage risks for CVS practitioners around here (esp. Dr. Stern ) are exceedingly low. We are lucky to be in an area with true experts. That wasn't a factor for me at all, whereas getting cleared on the chromosomal front was a huge benefit.

me too, 2x - 35 and 37. Just got back my sequential results and they're even better than when I was 35 (1 in 250,000 for down, 1 in 100,000 for trisomy). Do not assume your results will be bad b/c/o your age. Having taken care of yourself, taking folic acid before conception, etc. can substantially improve your risks compared to age-based #s.

FWIW, if my results had been scary either time I would have done CVS or amnio (depending how scary) but when they're over 1 in 1000 or so your risks of m/c are definitely higher.

I was AMA for my first pregnancy and obviously for my current one also. I didn't do any screening tests for my first pregnancy, and only the nuchal translucency with sequential screening for my 2nd pregnancy. Didn't do CVS or amnio for either. The results of the NT and sequential screening were enough for me, and even though the risk of miscarriage is somewhat minimal for the CVS and amnio, it was still higher than the odds of a serious genetic issue based on the sequential screening. So, I skipped them. I can't say if I would have done the amnio if the results were different. I think I probably wouldn't have if there was a higher chance of Downs Syndrome, but maybe would have for some of the other trisomy abnormalities which are much more severe and fatal in many cases.

Same here. Got good results on the blood tests and ultrasounds so did not do an amino. Where I lived when I was pregnant there was noone qualified to do NT tests or CVSs anyway.

First pregnancy I got good screening results so I didn't do any additional testing. Second pregnancy I got bad screening results, did the CVS immediately, got more bad results and chose to terminate. Third pregnancy I got good screening results but felt that I just really needed to do the CVS as well after what I went through the previous time. Got good results and am expecting a baby next month.

We did the nuchal and stopped there.

I refused genetic counseling too. When offered, I just shrugged and said "I'm old?" I just don't see the point of just-in-case information or what-if scenarios. I focused on the babies I had. If the nuchal tests had come back with questions, I most certainly would have followed up.

I can't stand the fear-mongering that's become a routine part of pregnancy. It's undue stress.

Nuchal only.

I think a lot of the decision comes down to what you would do with the results. We wouldn't have terminated so I saw no need for the invasive tests once the nuchal came back fine. If the nuchal had indicated risk or if there had been any markers at the 20 week ultrasound we may have done an amnio for confirmation so we could've been prepared.

I did the nuchal only.

My risk was extremely low for T18/T13, which were the ones for which I would have considered termination. My T21 risk seemed a little high to me, but was actually lower than the general risk for my age (I'm 41). Since I would not have done anything with "bad" T21 results, I opted not to subject myself to invasive testing.

38, 39 when son was born. did not do amnio or cvs. did the nuchal and quad screening. my numbers were good, but not off-the-charts excellent. also have a relative with downs.
