The president is not a literal traitor and those Americans you mention have benefited greatly from his policies. There is a growing movement of American minorities who are tired of drinking the left wing kool-aid. You are going to have to come up with more than just name calling and throwing around feelings as facts. I suggested a way that OP could engage her FIL in some civilized conversation but it doesn’t sound like she’s interested in doing that OR she’s tried with no success. I’m not sure if OP implied that her in-laws are helping them financially but if they are, perhaps she should rethink taking money from someone who is as “close minded” as her FIL.

More details please? What policies? Who benefited except for super-rich individuals and corporations?

No.

Most Americans who watch Fox don’t know who Rupert Murdoch is. They don’t know WHY he’s trying to screw them.

They don’t know that the Republican Party has become an alliance of billionaires, liars, and suckers.

They work for peanuts at Walmart and they don’t blame the Walton family for spending millions on politicians and propaganda to hold down minimum wages. They blame Democrats because Fox lies to them.

The only way to help rural white people who watch Fox is to give them information about how they are getting screwed by Republican billionaires, and why.
I promise, this works. It worked with my uncle.

The president is a literal traitor.

And the Republicans put a $2.1 trillion tax cut for billionaires on a credit card. Rural white people who watch Fox — and their kids — are going to be the ones paying that back.
The Republicans tried to destroy red states’ health care systems, and economies, and failed by only one vote in the Senate.

The president and Republican billionaires are screwing the GOP base and robbing them blind. They’re rubes. And Murdoch and Adelson and the Koches laugh at them.

You should listen to him. You might learn something.

The examples you listed aren’t racist. His opinion that rich people shouldn’t pay for poor people to go to college has some merits. Perhaps you could talk about parameters for college for those who can’t afford it. Maybe a required stem major so that kids aren’t graduating with degrees that they can’t find employment and $$$ in loans?

As for the presidential remark, I’m of the opinion that you salute the office, not the man (or woman). So, yes, you shouldn’t disrespect the president whatever his/her name may be.

Northerners (and southerners) do want to tear down confederate statues. There are some who believe that they are a tribute to America’s darkest time. There are others who think that removing them is an attempt to erase history without holding those accountable. I’m not comfortable personally with confederate statues but I see that it’s a slippery slope (will we eventually burn Mt Vernon to the ground due to its slave past?).

Bottom line is that your FIL has opinions and, while he may in fact be an awful person, nothing you mentioned above tells me that. He has strong opinions. Share yours and back them up with facts because feelings aren’t facts. You may be surprised that he may be more flexible than you thought.

This. And it's his house.

Job market and economy say otherwise. Anyway, you’ll get your chance to make your point in 2020, but don’t be surprised by the landslide that keeps President Trump around for four more years.

The unemployment rate in minority populations is the lowest it’s been in decades. The president is pro AMERICA and Americans are every race, color, creed, sex, gender.

The super rich always benefit from govt. You cannot seriously believe that big business and the uber wealthy don’t benefit under Democratic policies. Who do you think attends those Bernie and HRC $20,000 a plate fundraisers?

Take the kids outside or in another room and do something. Is MIL around? Go out and do something with her and the kids, don't sit there and watch FOX with him all day long.

Really glad my FIL had the decency not to watch the news while we were there, and not to talk about politics.

It will not help or change anything to engage. Let your kids know this is what happens when people view too much propaganda and don't think critically. And pay more attention to the tv than to having fun and making memories with their family.

All you have is whataboutism, and saying that we have the same economy we had under Obama? Time to read some real news.

Dems are on the side of working people. Obama created a healthcare system that helped 99% of America by making rich people pay their fair share of taxes.
The first thing the GOP did in office was to try to destroy that healthcare system because they wanted to cut taxes on the rich.

There’s only one party in America that is in thrall to billionaires: the Republican Party.

And the president is pro-billionaire.
He also pretends to be pro-WHITE PEOPLE so they’ll vote for the billionaires.
He’s also anti-America. Have you read the Federalist Papers? The Founders specifically warned about this president. The Founders would be calling him a traitor today too.

To OP: don’t talk about issues with them. Just talk about Rupert Murdoch anytime they bring up politics. Maybe they’ll figure out who is screwing them and why.

These are good points. Esp. about TV and the info-tainment that passes for news and using as a teaching novena for the kids.
Two comments:
Fox is propaganda, not “news”. It’s different from MSNBC and CNN which seek profit but havent had partisans like Ailes/Murdoch running them. When you talk to your kids don’t imply Fox is news- esp if they’re older than 8 or so, explain what Fox (and Limbaugh) really are.
Yeah talking about politics is counterproductive. If you say anything while you’re there, comment about Fox and its owners. When you deal with the brainwashed you have to figure out a way to give them new information.
Anonymous
And talking to conservatives about Fox really can change minds. Choose your moments, but don’t give up on changing minds- it’s important to spread your values. (Your kids in 20 years will be talking about what you all did during this dangerous time for America.)

You're kidding, right? Consider this for a moment - the actual President of the United States drew a capacity crowd last night to kick off his reelection campaign. MSNBC did not even carry the story! Compare that to the endless coverage that the station has given the 20+ democrat challengers. At least CNN carried the President's speech for about 6 minutes before cutting away. Compare that to the 20+ minutes that they carried of Biden's speech when he announced last week. Whether you support the President or not, this event in itself was news.

Because Trump is a lying POS. Why should he get the free press? Save it for any other candidate.

The “rich” pay almost all of the taxes in this country.
