You're kidding, right? Consider this for a moment - the actual President of the United States drew a capacity crowd last night to kick off his reelection campaign. MSNBC did not even carry the story! Compare that to the endless coverage that the station has given the 20+ democrat challengers. At least CNN carried the President's speech for about 6 minutes before cutting away. Compare that to the 20+ minutes that they carried of Biden's speech when he announced last week. Whether you support the President or not, this event in itself was news.

Because Trump is a lying POS. Why should he get the free press? Save it for any other candidate.

What did he say last night that was untrue? Oh, wait, you didn't watch, so you wouldn't know.

Very good point. Agenda news at its finest. Can't wait to see their poll coverage around election time, lol.

Just as long as you realize that the rightwing press tells you that talking “politics” is bad — because hey want people to stay silent while rightwing billionaires loot the country (and take your money).
Reality is that politics is about society and about other people.
If you care about others, you should talk politics.

The president is a literal traitor who disrespects women, nonwhites, immigrants, anyone who’s views differ from his, his country and human decency. Nobody owes that monster an ounce of respect. That’s not a biased opinion. It’s fact.

The president is not a literal traitor and those Americans you mention have benefited greatly from his policies. There is a growing movement of American minorities who are tired of drinking the left wing kool-aid. You are going to have to come up with more than just name calling and throwing around feelings as facts. I suggested a way that OP could engage her FIL in some civilized conversation but it doesn’t sound like she’s interested in doing that OR she’s tried with no success. I’m not sure if OP implied that her in-laws are helping them financially but if they are, perhaps she should rethink taking money from someone who is as “close minded” as her FIL.

More details please? What policies? Who benefited except for super-rich individuals and corporations?

The unemployment rate in minority populations is the lowest it’s been in decades. The president is pro AMERICA and Americans are every race, color, creed, sex, gender.

The super rich always benefit from govt. You cannot seriously believe that big business and the uber wealthy don’t benefit under Democratic policies. Who do you think attends those Bernie and HRC $20,000 a plate fundraisers?

All you have is whataboutism, and saying that we have the same economy we had under Obama? Time to read some real news.

Dems are on the side of working people. Obama created a healthcare system that helped 99% of America by making rich people pay their fair share of taxes.
The first thing the GOP did in office was to try to destroy that healthcare system because they wanted to cut taxes on the rich.

There’s only one party in America that is in thrall to billionaires: the Republican Party.

And the president is pro-billionaire.
He also pretends to be pro-WHITE PEOPLE so they’ll vote for the billionaires.
He’s also anti-America. Have you read the Federalist Papers? The Founders specifically warned about this president. The Founders would be calling him a traitor today too.

To OP: don’t talk about issues with them. Just talk about Rupert Murdoch anytime they bring up politics. Maybe they’ll figure out who is screwing them and why.

The “rich” pay almost all of the taxes in this country.

That’s because they’ve rigged the economy to have totally unregulated markets.
And as any economics student knows, in totally unregulated markets all the profits flow to the top.

If you want crappy antitrust laws and poor monopoly regulation, like we have today, you need an 80%+ tax rate on the rich, and/or a wealth tax.
That’s the numbers that actual economists (not the liars like Moore and Laffer that work for the GOP) widely agree on.

Oh please. I won't go through all of them, but the so-called fact checking is filled with equivocation itself. Starting with #1, yes, the US became the top producer of crude oil under President Trump. #2 - the President didn't say the investigation itself was illegal; he said there was an "illegal with hunt" - you know, surveillance, warrants obtained under false pretenses, etc. #3 - it is well documented that many Democrats previously supported all the same border initiatives that they are now opposing. And on and on and on...

I felt relief when he passed.

The examples you listed aren’t racist. His opinion that rich people shouldn’t pay for poor people to go to college has some merits. Perhaps you could talk about parameters for college for those who can’t afford it. Maybe a required stem major so that kids aren’t graduating with degrees that they can’t find employment and $$$ in loans?

As for the presidential remark, I’m of the opinion that you salute the office, not the man (or woman). So, yes, you shouldn’t disrespect the president whatever his/her name may be.

Northerners (and southerners) do want to tear down confederate statues. There are some who believe that they are a tribute to America’s darkest time. There are others who think that removing them is an attempt to erase history without holding those accountable. I’m not comfortable personally with confederate statues but I see that it’s a slippery slope (will we eventually burn Mt Vernon to the ground due to its slave past?).

Bottom line is that your FIL has opinions and, while he may in fact be an awful person, nothing you mentioned above tells me that. He has strong opinions. Share yours and back them up with facts because feelings aren’t facts. You may be surprised that he may be more flexible than you thought.

This. And it's his house.

Very easy solution: don’t go to his house.

For me, it’s not the politics that’s tiring, but the constant anger. The in-laws have Fox News on in the background and I really think it’s made them into crotchety old people and more angry than they would be otherwise.
I also don’t like CNN and MSNBC as everything is a crisis, including Melania’s wordrobe.
The constant anger and the bitching and moaning really brings me down.

Yes exactly.

CNN and MSNBC aren’t great. They’re info-tainment. Their goal has morphed into seeking ratings at all costs. CNN brought ESPN ideas over— that’s why CNN has panels of talking heads “screaming hot takes they don’t even believe”. It’s modeled directly on Around the Horn on ESPN. Plus MSNBC and CNN are owned and run by conservatives, so they’re never going to be designed to push a Democratic viewpoint.

Fox, on the other hand, is pure Republican propaganda. It was designed to be such from day 1, by Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch. And since its demographic is basically old white people and people with an authoritarian mindset (who like anger and order), its become a factory of anger and hate.

You are totally within your rights to ask the in-laws to turn off Fox. For your sanity, and theirs.
It’s not like CNN and MSNBC are much better either. TV cable “news” is hurting the whole country.

You're damn right we're angry. For nearly three years, the President and those who voted for him have been ATTACKED, ATTACKED, ATTACKED, all in an attempt to delegitimize the duly elected President of the United States and thwart the peaceful transition of power that sets us apart from the rest of the world.

Exactly how would you feel if we were neighbors and I walked out into the yard every morning and screamed unfounded vitriol at you and your family, day in and day out, for three years?
