How many undocumented students are enrolled in MCPS?

Most of these ESOL kids are FARMS kids too. FARMS kids use more resources as well

So PPs do you have a problem with FARMS kids too or just ESOL kids.

My only take away from what's been laid out here is it boils down to $425 million expense for us to continue on this path. That's a lot of textbooks (or not).

25,000 x $17,000 = $425,000,000

I'm pro-immigration but this doesn't seem to be working. Where should the funding come from?

It's like you think these people were born with brains smaller than yours. Come on. It's human nature to want to provide food, shelter and live a happy life. Central Americans have suffered DECADES of injustice and wake up call here.... guess who is at fault? WE ARE.

Educate yourself and your children. We absolutely have a problem, but you throw them to the wolves and you'll have an even bigger problem. Deal with those that are here, help educate them and at the same time, work with leaders to help ensure policies that don't continue to oppress these people.

You sound like Jack Smith.

Parents have brought up valid concerns in this thread - Why do we spend all this money on Head Start/PreK when it might not even be effective? Why do we spend all this money on Head Start/PreK when parents can just register their kids but there is no mandatory attendance?? Just like parents at Rockville HS want to know why we have a program that allows kids who are 21/22 to be in public high schools with 14 year old girls?

But instead of actually discussing these issues, you just want to yell out RACISM!! It's been an excellent strategy so far. Jack Smith still has a fantastic job, making good money. And the money keeps pouring in because anyone who questions it is tagged as heartless and racist.

My kid comes home with crappy photocopied HW assignments that have been cut and pasted from free online websites. Sometimes the HW doesn't make any sense so we have to look it up online to see what they are actually asking. I would LOVE for some textbooks to help with the math curriculum. (Sorry, somewhat OT)

The PP copied and pasted resources in Montgomery County MD targeting Hispanics both illegal and illegal. These people were/are NOT thrown to the wolves. If anyone is thrown to the wolves it's the taxpayers in MONTCO.

As one posted the only construction or road trucks seen for miles in many areas are there with public money to benefit Hispanics OR paid for privately. I wonder how many people stray into DC for free pre school.

Where have you all been? That's my point. You want to cry now, because someone was raped. Could have been anyone.

Fight for your child's education, let the people who understand immigration fight for immigration reform. There is money to get new textbooks, it's not due to over crowding, it's a choice on where federal/state dollars are being spent.

Just like many of you said, if I could spend my money on other things you would. Well guess what... so are politicians.

I agree!

But to be fair, in this case, the two issues of public education and illegal immigration have collided BIGLY.

According to Obama the funding comes from wherever they land with a guardian/parent if caught by ICE. From there it is determined by how the LEA [local education authority] is funded by the SEA [state education authority] . If there is a high % of funding from residential real estate or commercial real estate or local income taxes then local taxpayers are funding them.

This upsurge was caused by Obama Dream Act which needs to be obliterated.

That collision has been there for years. If you do care you are called racist. In FX each $.01 on the property taxes is worth 23.75m. If each known unaccompanied minor costs 15000x3925=$58,875,000. State and federal aid are paltry so at a minimum [include facilities, SRO, nurses, activities] est to be 3 on the taxes. But that's just for the known illegals. If there are 20,000 illegals that's 11% of the residential real estate property taxes before non-operating budgets.

How much money does the state give MONTCO which like FX supports the majority of the state?

You are right. Hopefully voters are becoming more aware of what's going on. And are willing to demand change.

What BS excuse is that? Asian kids excel in all situations and the parents figure out the textbooks even if one is not assigned. Ever heard of Singapore Math? This has nothing to do with undocumented students. I can understand their achievement gap, but what about the rest of US?

They've done that in some states. In Florida all classroom teachers need to have esol certification to be licensed by that state. This means that the classroom teacher is both the grade level teacher for that kid and the esol teacher. It saves a lot of money because they aren't paying for separate esol teacher. Not sure if this is good or bad - it's probably a lot more work for the classroom teacher. I can see why every state would move in that direction from a financial perspective.

This is how it was done where I grew up.

They could always just pull kids out for help with reading/math as needed.

I taught back when they did this. It works well in the younger grades--especially if there are not very many non-English speakers in the class. It does not work at all when you have a large population that all speak the same foreign language. In other words, if you have half your class that speaks Spanish, it is going to be more difficult because the kids will cling together and speak Spanish at lunch and on playground. That is where the kids learn to speak English--with English speaking kids.

Of course, there are things you can do as a teacher to help them learn English--but nothing is as effective as hanging out with English speaking peers. The motivation: friends. Young children will learn English quickly at school. Older ones--not nearly as quickly. Also, the kids tend to live in the same community.

I have a Chinese American friend who did not speak English until she went to school. Her parents were told that they needed to start speaking English at home--and they did. My friend claims she cannot speak Chinese (I think she understands it.) Her parents were not well-educated, but they were motivated to have their kids do well. My friend tells me that her parents spoke broken English, but hers is perfect.

There is no easy answer.
