Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)

How are the "17" year olds being supported (food, shelter, etc)?
What entitlements do you have as a "17" year old registered in high school at MCPS? Other PPs mentioned insurance & other benefits. How does this work? [Trying to get a handle of what the attraction is of the METS program or high school in general if you are "17" years old and recently arrived as an unaccompanied minor from Central America. Just doesn't ring true to me that these kids are really interested in a high school education after not having been in school in your home country for at least 2 years. I would have thought they are coming either to work construction/menial labor or as part of a criminal enterprise (ie members of a gang/dealing drugs). In either case, attending high school would crimp your ability to earn $ from either of these activities if you are spending a significant part of every day in school.] |
No way! Think about it. You have a whole built in population of kids to sell drugs to! Much easier to deal in schools than behind the 7-11. You have a nice built in clientele. Drugs are a HUGE problem in all MCPS schools (not just ones with illegal immigrants). Gangs? Police departments in both MoCo and Fairfax County have acknowledged that MS-13 is a problem in the schools. You have easy access to younger kids who may make good recruits. Free meals? MCPS provides free breakfast and lunch if you are low income. It really is a fantastic set up. Definitely worth lying about your age to take advantage. |
Also, free English lessons and you can sign up for one of the high-school programs such as SEPA which helps with job skillls and placement...available to only Spanish speakers by the way: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/esol/instruction/sepa.aspx Not to mention, these folks are typically ending up in title 1 schools where there's more funding, more resources, better teacher to student ratios, etc.. They have it great here and this is widely known back in their countries. Why wouldn't they want to come here? We are practically inviting them to come! Meanwhile, we've been fooled by the MoCo beaurocrats that we have one of the best public schools in the system despite the faCT that your school is likely overcrowded and under resourced. You better not complain about where your taxes are going by the way, else you are racist. |

Dinner too.;.Blair offers dinner to any kid after school..regardless of income |
| The heartlessness on here is breathtaking. No, Central American teenagers aren't fleeing their countries just for the opportunity to eat a free lunch, sell drugs to your white teenager, and bide their time until they can rape someone. You should be ashamed of yourself. Next you're going to suggest they be put on rail cars and sent to concentration camps. My children go to school with many immigrant children, probably some undocumented, and you have no idea what you're talking about. Your loose words can beget violence. |
I think that is the intent. |
Ding, ding, ding - when all else fails, play the Nazi card! Also, are you threatening violence?? |
My kids go to a Title 1 school in MoCo. I'm a PP who is concerned about what is going on in MCPS and how much money gets spent on kids who are here ILLEGALLY. Can you please point out what posts you find offensive exactly? First off, my kids are not white. But, FTR, I don't think they're seeking the drugs to white teenagers. That's other white kids who are doing that. But they are selling drugs to other Latino/AA kids who are in schools with them. Are your kids in ES? Where will they go to MS? Just wait it out and see if you feel as 'welcoming' as your kids go through the school system. Even my sister's Latina housekeeper doesn't want to send her two daughters to the MS she is zoned for because she knows about what goes on there. This is not about parents being racist, no matter how much you try to make people think that. It's about how the school system has limited resources and it appears that some of these resources are not being spent wisely. |
OBNOXIOUS. NOBODY on this thread called for violence. Except for you. |
I would totally quit if I were a teacher in Florida. That is way too much to put on them. |
How about this. Your loose regard for immigration laws begets rape. If you're allowed to make big generalized statements, then so am I. Because, guess what? Your loose regard for immigration laws and welcoming attitude towards ILLEGAL immigrants (from all over, not just Central America - for some reason, YOU are choosing to focus on Central amwricans), led to a 14 year old girl being raped in a high school bathroom. Shame on you. You can advocate to change the laws that make immigraion difficult, but just flaunting the laws does not appear to be working. |
The posts I found offensive were the ones saying that teenagers were coming here unaccompanied from Central America in order to lie about their ages and and sneak into our high schools for the opportunity to eat free meals in school and sell drugs. That is loony conspiracy theory stuff. If it's relevant to you my child is in a middle school that's about half Hispanic. |
| Do you ever wonder what choices you would make if you were born to a poor family in Guatemala? |
This is where we differ. I don't think that the lax enforcement of immigration laws "led" to this rape any more than I think Brock Turner's swimming career "led" to him raping a girl. They are illegal immigrants and they are accused of rape but these things are not equal. |
Guess you never saw Drugs.Inc in which they interviewed actual drug dealers who came from Mexico for the sole purpose to sell drugs, didn't ya? Did you realize that the dealers purposely target cities all over the United States? This was told directly to the makers of Drug Inc. by the dealers!! Also, did you know that many people are forced to come up here to work and wire the $$ back to the drug dealers or they will kill their families? Shouldn't we instead focus on closing our border so this lunacy can't continue? |
