Eh, nowadays this isn't as much of an issue. When I was last working in a trendy expensive restaurant 7 years ago, 85% of my tips were done on the credit card and therefore taxed. These days I bet it's even higher. Cash is on its death bed for 95% of consumers. The remaining 5% are old people and people who make money under the table in cash businesses (strippers, drug dealers, undocumented workers, small biz owners skimming, etc.) |
And how much is the NRA paying you? |
Just as I thought. Pretty obscure acronym, yet you know it and are following this thread closely. You’re on the payroll. |
So are you okay when diners no longer tip at restaurants? This will mean people aren't tipping like in Europe. |
Very deceptive. |
As do you. For the record, I do not work for ROC and wouldn’t financially benefit from this initiative passing. How about you? |
Yes that's ridiculous. If you make a good wage, you don't need a tip. |
You think 15/hour is a good wage? |
Yes. Costco workers aren't tipped, nor are most other lower waged workers. We just hired our secretary at work for $20 an hour- no tips or bonus either and she has a BA. |
For unskilled labor that does not require any education? Yes. |
|
Ha ha, sure. Ok.
I don’t stand to benefit from anyone or anything financially. I’m early retired and live in downtown DC. I get out quite a bit — not at high end places, btw, which isnt my thing — and I know many, many bartenders and servers. Every single one of them, many of whom are people of color are adamantly opposed to this law. I don’t know a single person in the industry who isn’t. I also make a point of asking servers who I don’t know what they think. The last one I asked (on an inexpensive Father’s Day brunch on Florida Avenue) was an African American woman. She didn’t hesitate: “I’m against it.” I have enough respect for the affected people to support their view. They’re not idiots who need to be “protected” by outside groups with their own agenda. |

The average for DC tipped workers is WELL ABOVE minimum wage. Don't put our local THRIVING restaurant industry out of business and HUNDREDS of people out of a job because some self-serving interest group wants to use us as their pet project experiment to further their goals of unionizing our industry.
As tipped workers, we are already guaranteed BY LAW to make at least minimum wage - which will be $15/hour in DC by 2020 (LONG before the proposed i77 would have it in 2026). The difference is that #initiative77 will ELIMINATE the tip credit, leaving us all to scrape by on solely $15/hour. With tips, we, on average, make a HELL OF A LOT MORE than $15/hour. If you think people are still gonna tip ON TOP of the 30% +++++ higher menu prices that will be implemented to cover a 200% +++ higher labor cost, think again. Just look at how people lost their sh*t on Starbucks last week when they raise the price of coffee by 20 CENTS. 20 F*****G CENTS and people lost it. Imagine how our tips and businesses will suffer under the guaranteed increase in menu prices across the board. Having a tip credit system allows ME to make good money and YOU, the consumer, to enjoy such popular things like HAPPY HOUR AND BOTTOMLESS BRUNCH. Those things are just an example of the many things that will be lost under #initiative77. PLEASE VOTE NO. |

Too late - I already voted YES. I'm even wearing the "I Voted/Yo Vote" sticker on my shirt today at work

| I voted For. Can’t wait to stop paying tips! |
