Folks, here's the list of jobs that would be affected by this. All these jobs are making the minimum "tipped wage" of $3.33/hour because they also get tips.
While all the focus has been on restaurant workers, these other job categories get nowhere near close to actual minimum wage based on tips. And in many cases their employers refuse to pay them the differential, as required by law. It's absolutely insane to me that nail salon workers are making just over $3/hour. Absolutely ridiculous. List of jobs that would increase to $15/hour with an 8 year phase-in period by voting Yes on 77: -Front of house restaurant employees (servers, hosts, etc) -Back of house restaurant employees (dishwashers, food prep, janitorial) -Car washers -Nail salon workers -Parking attendants -Valets at the hotel -Landscapers -Housecleaners -Hair stylists -Massage therapists -Baristas -...basically anyone who may get a tip. The list is bonkers of individuals in the service industry who get these artificially low wages, simply because they may (or may not!) get a tip. |
This is what is swaying me to Yes. I had no idea so many people outside the restaurant industry were making $3.33/hour. It's inhuman and a travesty of law.

+1 Yes, this is what swayed me to change my no vote to a yes. |
| BS. Show me ONE massage therapist making $3.33 an hour. |

Here’s a very recent job listing for a parking attendant in DC. Starting pay is $12.50 an hour. This list is TOTAL BS.

How much do you think they make in those Chinese massage places? I'm betting not more than $8-10/hour. Plus, they are all immigrants and serve at the whims of the business owner. |
Uh, so? Your n=1 "evidence" is meaningless. That doesn't mean all garages are paying that much. That's the payment if you speak English and have the necessary technology in your personal possession to answer an ad. Other places hire via word of mouth and pay less, especially if you speak limited English. |
And what landscaper is reliant on tips?? |
You’re obviously not an economist. No company in DC is going to pay a parking attendant $12.50 if the going rate is $3.33. |
| By 2025, $15 will not be a living wage. It will be too little to be considered a living wage so I do to see the point and approving the legislation. |

I think servers are against it based on hopes and dreams and unknowns, much like many people are against a change, particularly if a well-funded industry group has been whispering in your ear for a long time that this will end badly for you.
I'm voting for it. |
Because you know more about what's better for them than the people actually working in the industry? |
NP - no, but I’ve only heard from people working in restaurants. I get that the majority seem happy with the status quo, but I still don’t really understand why because customers will continue to tip so this helps make sure that everyone at least has a baseline. But my real concern is, as the PPs above say, all the other tipped workers who don’t seem to have spoken out, like the nail salon employees. From what I have read, voting no seems to disadvantage those who dont have a voice |
| The mayor and the majority of the Council have the authority to override a yes vote, so if this passes I hope they do override it. |
What do you do for a living? |
