I wonder how many servers would make out better with this base plus 10% instead of 15-25% One benefit is servers often get paid the tiny wage before customers arrive, so they will be doing better during those prep hours I won't enjoy dining out in DC as much after this new law passes |
Yup, that's the crux of this issue. Tipped employees can make as little as $3.33/hour, but most make somewhere between $5-10/hour. This is still below the current minimum wage of $12.50/hour. |

| I am for it, because I think with will help servers in the long run (even if there is some upheaval in the short term), it will help tipped workers who are not servers, and because I think it is time restaurants moved to the same labor model as virtually every other business in the country. Restaurants use this system to avoid paying as much as they should in taxes, and UE compensation insurance. |
I also think that this will make servers and other tipped workers pay more in taxes. It's not under the table anymore. |

To all my restaurant friends, I rarely Facebook but I have to explain my position on prop 77 explicitly. DC restaurant industry pays as little as possible per hour and has lobbied for over 20 years to do so (since 1991.) New prop will cause restaurants to lose money (over 10/hr) and so they have bankrolled a campaign called "save our tips." Most local restaurants (on their own interest, obviously) have bankrolled this lobbying effort. The lobbying firm behind this effort is the same who helped to elect Trump. Please realize that a few states have legalized minimum wage for servers. Please realize that BEFORE Prop 77 NO ONE KNEW WE MADE $3/ hr and THEY TIPPED 20%. AFTER PROP 77, MOST PEOPLE WILL NOT BE AWARE OF THE CHANGE AND WILL CONTINUE TO TIP 15-20% This has already passed and prospered on the West coast. This is a PROGRESSIVE measure, just like marijuana legalization and gay marriage, DC IS AHEAD OF THE CURVE. The one downside of this bill is that it will negatively effect local small businesses. I acknowledge this, but maintain, that as the victims of an NRA (national restaurant assoc.) Lobbying effort for 20 + years, it SHOULD NOT BE ON THE BACK OF RESTAURANT WORKERS TO MAKE UP THIS DEFICIT. Please text/call with questions and ask your co-workers this question: WHY DO YOU THINK YOU WILL LOSE TIPS? There is a lot of misinformation going on her, because your bosses are paying for this to save money. The legit employers make up the difference. But many, many businesses do not and then pressure their employees to not complain. It's an inherently unequal power dynamic. Furthermore, it's extremely difficult to ensure compliance unless you get a critical mass of current/former tipped employees complaining to the District. It puts all the pressure for getting paid properly on workers - wtf? Just give them all a living wage. |
| That is what I posted on Facebook. I am from DC and have worked in the industry well over ten years, currently supporting a family with 2 healthy restaurant incomes. There are other issues and complications that come from not paying your staff. Please vote YES!! |
What do you think the compliance rate is among businesses on this rule? 80% of the wage and hour enforcement cases brought by the DOL in the Obama years were in the restaurant industry. Add to that the problem that undocumented workers are afraid to come forward and even pick up back pay awards from govt offices because of Trump ICE enforcement. |
At least the taxes will be paid instead of facing a huge bill at tax time. |
