Vacation drama with mother

I'm sorry, OP. What a bitch! Glad you left and I hope you get a real vacation next time. Hugs!

OP, I did this at spring break with my Dad. I think the thing is that my kids are older. I should have never allowed them to see their grandfather speak to me like that. We left and wouldn't you know it now he acts like nothing ever happened.

Sorry you had to do it. But proud of you for doing it sooner than I ever did.

Is it possible that your mother thinks of frozen waffles as breakfast for kids and that adults should have something better? I'm not a fan of frozen waffles and not trying to judge, but I think of frozen waffles as something you might feed your kid before school if you are running late. Maybe she thinks you should take better care of yourself? Maybe she did buy the waffles for the kids and thought you should know they are a kid thing?

She called you selfish, which tells me she thought you should some how know the waffles were not for you and that you were only thinking of yourself and not considering the kids.

So PP, walk us through your justification for the mom calling her fat. Tell us how it was okay for someone to call her daughter who just had a baby "fat" and 'for eating some frozen waffles at breakfast. Break that down for us.

Who do you mean? OP or her mom?

well, mother was rude and overreacted in her own way, but leaving vacation because of that? i don't get it. i always thought these scene in american movies where people storm out of the room felt fake but i guess you people really do act like that. everyone is so sensitive.

If her mother came to her and said, "Hey, I'm sorry. I was totally out of line with that comment calling you fat and selfish. I apologize," then yes, storming out might be a bit much. But the mother didn't. Instead she doubled down and called her a bitch. Why would anyone want to spend their vacation being insulted and belittled??? OP can have her vacation wherever she wants. So she's choosing to spend it elsewhere. Can't believe you don't get that PP.

Ah, yes..."American movies". Yep, PP, in our culture women sometimes stand up for themselves when people act abusively towards them. Not everyone finds virtue in being a doormat.

Nowhere did op say she stormed out of the house and no one suggested she do that. It's interesting that when someone disagreed with you, you argued back with an extreme misinterpretation of what was said. Either you are someone who is very rude or you grew up around rude and inappropriate people and think this is normal.

You should leave, after you tell her off. But I disagree with PP who says your spouse who was not there should be responsible for defending your dignity. OP is a grown adult and these are her parents.

I missed the part where OP stormed out of the room.

You missed it because it didn't happen.

What she said wasn't ok. The fact that you said nothing means that this is probably your normal dynamic with her.is this normally the topic? Your weight?

Having said that I would never have served myself three frozen waffles in a group living setting where there are other mouths to feed, especially frozen waffles which I also consider to be last minute kids food. It sucks even more that your husband was out running at the time as you were gorging on these waffles in your mother's eyes. i'm sure the contrast was not lost on your mother.

Id think carefully before doing this trip again. I can't think of much worse than a trip like this other than actually having to wear my bathing suit in front of my mother on the beach.

It sounds like you have your own issues with your weight and your mother. Get your own thread.

if my mother told something analogous to this (she could be quite "rude" but ultimately well meaning and there was always a kernel of truth there) she would have gotten quite a mouthful back, then and there. but there would be no storming out of the house and changing vacation plans. it's not about being a doormat, it's about having a sense of proportion.
