Should I report my neighbors for car tax evasion?

I don't know the neighbors at all, so I'm neutral. My only impression of them is that they apparently are deliberately evading not only Virginia property taxes but also Virginia car registration rules. That's a lot of revenue cheating.

They're renters. I really don't care about poisoning that well.

I'm not emotional about this. I'm just trying to sort the ethics. I'm leaning towards reporting.

I'm a little surprised neither has been at least ticketed for driving around with expired plates. The other car is a Lincoln. Its Wisconsin plates expired in October 2024.

I don't believe you. This from your OP tells exactly how you feel; you are annoyed because they keep to themselves and aren't friendly to you: Live in Virginia. A couple moved in next door a year or so ago. Haven’t met them — they keep to themselves, whatever.

My neighbor reported me for car tax evasion even though my spouse went in uniform to the military base every day and we discussed with her that we were an active duty military family. We were investigated by the county but ultimately determined to be exempt from the tax due to active duty military status and a permanent residence outside the state. I will not ever forgive her for making a false report and putting that stress on me. I am determined to screw her in ways that are technically legal for the duration of my time here. I imagine others are similarly petty.

I have military neighbors who live very far (a 1 to 1.5 hour commute depending on traffic) from the base. I know this due to introducing ourselves and talking to them a bit when they first moved in. They picked our town due to schools for their kids.

I think it's odd you are jumping to conclusions and want to meddle without even knowing the most basic facts about the people right next door to you. It's unkind and has very little upside. If they are not following the law then they can face consequences when pulled over.

I give you credit OP for thinking of ethics on your part when your neighbors clearly are beyond doing so. People who do not pay their taxes are ones that think they are entitled to do or be something different than the rest of us. They believe they are better than everyone else. I can't know for sure of course but I am willing to bet that OP's neighbors do not care one bit about ethics.

Half the people in my "luxury apartment' building have out of state plates, including myself and DH. Not going to register our vehicles in VA when we will leave the state in 16 months.

I ended up behind the car with California plates today at a stop sign as we both pulled out of our driveways at the same time. The plates expired in June 2024.

I am normally a live and let live person, but tax avoidance costs everyone more. Would you report this if you were in my shoes? I am trying to decide…

I live in VA and I would do it 100% unless I talk to the neighbor and have a cordial relationship. They drive it up for everyone else....
