Should I report my neighbors for car tax evasion?

If it was someone I felt neutral about or liked, I don't know. I might just ignore it. I do agree with others that tax evasion hurts everyone, and that's certainly what I told myself when I *gleefully* reported those jerks, but usually I'm a mind-your-own-business sort of person so I'm not sure.

Do you justifiably dislike your neighbor? If yes, I support. you! If not, think about whether you want to poison the well or just let this go.

I don't know the neighbors at all, so I'm neutral. My only impression of them is that they apparently are deliberately evading not only Virginia property taxes but also Virginia car registration rules. That's a lot of revenue cheating.

They're renters. I really don't care about poisoning that well.

I'm not emotional about this. I'm just trying to sort the ethics. I'm leaning towards reporting.

I'm a little surprised neither has been at least ticketed for driving around with expired plates. The other car is a Lincoln. Its Wisconsin plates expired in October 2024.

Yes. Also report them for insurance fraud.

Keep in mind if you do this then this couple will be keen to return the favor. They'll find out it was you. They will start watching you like a hawk for any violations and reporting you. Argument with your spouse or kids? Police at your door for safety check. An unapproved (by HOA) item in your backyard? Reported. Friends over for an evening of (loud) conversation on your back deck? Call the police for noise complaint. Your young kids playing outside without supervision? Call the police. What goes around come back around, OP. You might have this neighbor. Do you want to find out? Just mind your own business. If they drive those cars, they'll get caught eventually.

One has a car with Wisconsin plates. One with California plates. I suppose they could be exempt but we live in Western Loudoun so I doubt they work on the Hill or are in the military.

I ended up behind the car with California plates today at a stop sign as we both pulled out of our driveways at the same time. The plates expired in June 2024.

I am normally a live and let live person, but tax avoidance costs everyone more. Would you report this if you were in my shoes? I am trying to decide…

Don't be that neighbor. How miserable must your life be to devolve to this level of pettiness.

Do it, but so you know, if anything something bad comes to you in life, you probably did it to yourself. Same with your neighbors.
I actually think you all have a lot in common including extreme behavior.

What is actually wrong with you? Were you born with this character defect or did you develop it later in life?

None of that concerns me, although you really have an active imagination. Maybe see a mental health professional for your dysfunctional thought processes.

You people who think this would be "petty."

Would you report a business you knew to be engaging in tax evasion?

How can you live next door to someone for a year, never having met them? That's sounds like a you problem.

Take the initiative, introduce yourself (maybe bring them some cookies), and get to know them a little bit.

Is it easier to evade with out of state license plates? Asking for a friend!
To the point, no. They are against Trump and are voting with their purse!

I was this person for a while and it was because I was driving my elderly cancer ridden mom’s car back and forth a lot out of state (she could no longer drive) to take care of her. We are a one car family so I left our family car for my husband to drive while I was gone

Another time my then boyfriend was parking in the street in front of my house a lot. He lived in MD and he got a ticket and had to prove to DC he lived in MD and get some ROSA exemption to park frequently (legally- overnight had no permit restrictions). I had a busy body neighbor, and I bet she reported him.

YOU, I would report eagerly.

Too many plausible explanations for this. Not worth pursuing. MYOB.

The four other states I have lived in did not have car tax so they may not be avoiding the tax on purpose...doesn't mean they are not on top of getting registration in VA done, but it may not have a nefarious motive.
