Should I report my neighbors for car tax evasion?

You people are absurd. Of course you can have insurance with expired plates. Expired tags =\= no insurance.

+1 You can even have a current registration with expired tags. Maybe you forgot to put the new sticker on.

What a bunch of miserable busybodies.

+1. I'm surprised no one mentioned this possibility earlier. My bro (probably undiagnosed adhd) is current on payments but he is bad about putting new reg and insurance cards in the glove compartment and putting on the new sticker. He'd help anyone out in a second. TG he doesn't have a neighbor like you.

Uh if I get away with driving a car with expired plates, just why should I get car insurance because no one is checking. Scofflaws are scofflaws.

Uh, because you don’t want to be bankrupted by a car accident and/or want your car replaced if you get into an accident. It’s in your interest to have car insurance; it’s not just a legal requirement

Why is everyone so outraged anyway? I really don't see why all the love for people not registering their cars appropriately. I think the "military reason" was dealt with.

The cops will pull you over at some point because that is THEIR job.

It wasn’t. OP said because they’re in Loudoun, they suspect their neighbors aren’t military or hill staffers. That’s it.

I posted this because so many MYOB Karens think there is no problem with those out of state expired tags. Thanks for pointing out reasons.

One has a car with Wisconsin plates. One with California plates. I suppose they could be exempt but we live in Western Loudoun so I doubt they work on the Hill or are in the military.

I ended up behind the car with California plates today at a stop sign as we both pulled out of our driveways at the same time. The plates expired in June 2024.

I am normally a live and let live person, but tax avoidance costs everyone more. Would you report this if you were in my shoes? I am trying to decide…

Yes. They need to be responsible.

Then they need to manage it better.

OP here.

I've decided to leave it be. I might feel more strongly if they were driving $100,000 Range Rovers or something.

One of these days they'll get pulled over for expired registration and it'll take care of itself.

But I do agree with people who are saying it's likely they're unregistered and uninsured. It's not just the tax avoidance. They are kind of a menace driving around.

What if they have ADHD?

What if they are illiterate and can’t fill out the paperwork?

What if they don’t have hands to write?

What if they’re astronauts living in the space station?

What if they are sailors living in a submarine?

What if they are stuck in a cave in Africa?

What is they are living with monks in Nepal?

What if they are shipwrecked on an uninhabited island? It was only supposed to be a three day tour!
