Should I report my neighbors for car tax evasion?

Anonymous
EW, these are your neighbors. You are not the tax collector. Don't you have hobbies? Come on...

LOL boy howdy you must have bridges offered to you multiple times a day!

States are tightening up on this. Utah is leading the way with the most coherent code: if you insure the car to be primarily driven in that state, you pay the sales tax there and have to register the car there. Seems to be working well.

They may not have insurance making it a problem for whoever they hurt or total. But sure, not a problem...

I worked in Arlington with a horrible, horrible, horrible woman from PG County that used our office address to illegally register her kids at Yorktown.

I waited 3 years but after I left I reported her for residency fraud. I hope it bankrupted her.

You people are absurd. Of course you can have insurance with expired plates. Expired tags =\= no insurance.

I mean, isn't that on you? You were complicit if you forwarded anything along to her. It's not exactly like you can just state a random address and it's now your residence.

One has a car with Wisconsin plates. One with California plates. I suppose they could be exempt but we live in Western Loudoun so I doubt they work on the Hill or are in the military.

I ended up behind the car with California plates today at a stop sign as we both pulled out of our driveways at the same time. The plates expired in June 2024.

I am normally a live and let live person, but tax avoidance costs everyone more. Would you report this if you were in my shoes? I am trying to decide…

Please do.

+1 You can even have a current registration with expired tags. Maybe you forgot to put the new sticker on.

What a bunch of miserable busybodies.

What? I didn't have a damn thing to do with it. She lived in Ft Washington and came in everyday. This was real estate connected so I suspect she drafted a false lease.

Military don't have to move car registration each time they move on orders.

Sheesh, many people live paycheck to paycheck. They probably can't afford the high Virginia car tax.

I've lived in Virginia for 25 years and have no problem paying the car tax. The secret is to own reasonably-priced cars rather than the latest Tesla.

Preach. I live in VA and drive a 2004 Lexus. My car tax has been something around $25. Since my car is now 22 years old I'm hoping the tax goes down even more.
