Should I report my neighbors for car tax evasion?

Anonymous
I'm pretty much a stickler for rules, but even I wouldn't report my neighbors for this. There are much bigger fish to fry in the tax evasion category.

Go ahead and report if it makes you feel better. My brother in law (who is a terrible person) evaded taxes. Payroll and personal taxes for years. Not to mention writing off personal expenses to his business. We have reported him and he’s still getting away with it.

You should report report so they know Va is the lesser of the states.

Car tax ffs

I looked up the penalties for failure to register a car

If you move in from out of state, you have to register the car within Loudoun County, Virginia within 60 days. Failure to do so results in:

-- 10% late filing penalty (applied to the full value of the car, before any relief) plus $250. In addition to whatever taxes are owed, I think.

-- Out-of-state plates may result in an additional $100 tax.

Maybe I won't be the one to inflict them with this, but they're gonna get caught eventually.

If they haven't registered their cars they probably don't have insurance either.

They will start watching you like a hawk for any violations and reporting you. Argument with your spouse or kids? Police at your door for safety check. An unapproved (by HOA) item in your backyard? Reported. Friends over for an evening of (loud) conversation on your back deck? Call the police for noise complaint. Your young kids playing outside without supervision? Call the police. What goes around come back around, OP. You might have this neighbor. Do you want to find out? Just mind your own business. If they drive those cars, they'll get caught eventually.

No. We toured the House of Terror in Budapest last summer. One in three Hungarians was reported by their neighbors or family during the Communist regime. No way do I want to live in this type of society.

Yes. Report.

I did.

But only because I HATED my neighbor and had had huge problems with her.

They make it easy. At least it was in FFX.

Or be autistic or a chromosomal disorder. Stop excusing poor civic behavior.

Well that’s a big leap! Guess you are happy paying for other people. Sucker.

Take the initiative, introduce yourself (maybe bring them some cookies), and get to know them a little bit.

This. There may come a day when you need your neighbors.

One has a car with Wisconsin plates. One with California plates. I suppose they could be exempt but we live in Western Loudoun so I doubt they work on the Hill or are in the military.

I ended up behind the car with California plates today at a stop sign as we both pulled out of our driveways at the same time. The plates expired in June 2024.

I am normally a live and let live person, but tax avoidance costs everyone more. Would you report this if you were in my shoes? I am trying to decide…

Don't be that neighbor. How miserable must your life be to devolve to this level of pettiness.

What is actually wrong with you? Were you born with this character defect or did you develop it later in life?

You've said this to multiple people on this thread. Weird.

Maybe they're planning to move soon and don't want to bother with it.

Military?

Yes, report. Freeloaders cost us all. Would you report someone shoplifting? Same thing.
