Should I report my neighbors for car tax evasion?

Anonymous
Live in Virginia. A couple moved in next door a year or so ago. Haven’t met them — they keep to themselves, whatever.

One has a car with Wisconsin plates. One with California plates. I suppose they could be exempt but we live in Western Loudoun so I doubt they work on the Hill or are in the military.

I ended up behind the car with California plates today at a stop sign as we both pulled out of our driveways at the same time. The plates expired in June 2024.

I am normally a live and let live person, but tax avoidance costs everyone more. Would you report this if you were in my shoes? I am trying to decide…

Yes, people who don’t pay taxes affect the rest of us. You can report in Fairfax here https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dta_taxevaders/

Do you have nothing better to worry about?

You don't know what they are going through. They could be homeless or have cancer.

No.

What does that have to do with anything?

I’m just relieved someone out there is more of a slacker than I am!

Were you born an insufferable twat or is this learned behavior?

W0w...Pot kettle. OP is in the one with issues.

What issues are those? You’re the one needlessly insulting people on messaging boards. I am going with born wrong. You were born wrong. That explains your character defect.

They aren’t homeless. They’re literally renting the house next to mine.

What does cancer have anything to do with anything? Does having cancer exempt you from tax obligations?

Perhaps, due to the cost of the cancer treatments, they are squatters. It's a lot to deal with and they just haven't gotten around to the minor details necessary to satisfy their neighbors.

Why assume the worst? When you move there’s lots to take care of and maybe this just fell off their radar. Yes, they absolutely should have taken care of it long ago and need to deal with it now. However, if you feel compelled to intervene, instead of reporting them for tax evasion, why don’t you caution them that driving with expired plates might get them ticketed and so they need to update their registration? If you do broach the subject with them, do it as a helpful neighbor and not as a threat.

Then they can explain their exceptional circumstances to the government.

No. This isn’t something that just “falls off the radar” for 2 years after you move.
Tax evasion hurts everyone.

They aren’t squatters. I know the landlord. They pay rent.

Do you always go through the day experiencing an alternate reality? That’s quite the fantasy life you have there.

If it were a couple of months since they moved in, that would be one thing. It’s been closer to 18 months. And it isn’t me they need to satisfy, it’s the government.

Have you always loved freeloaders? Do you also love it when big corporations cheat on their taxes?

I have reported people for tax evasion, though to be fair, they were people how had been really terrible to me in the past. I just stumbled upon their tax evasion, but because I loathed them, I had zero guilt over reporting it. FAFO.

If it was someone I felt neutral about or liked, I don't know. I might just ignore it. I do agree with others that tax evasion hurts everyone, and that's certainly what I told myself when I *gleefully* reported those jerks, but usually I'm a mind-your-own-business sort of person so I'm not sure.

Do you justifiably dislike your neighbor? If yes, I support. you! If not, think about whether you want to poison the well or just let this go.
