To compare Usain Bolt to Lochte is ridiculous. Usain does his show because he thinks a part of sports is entertaining the crowd and having fun with them (see how Ali was when he was young). If Bolt did do something like this, he should be held accountable and would be vilified, and not because he's black, but because people have put him on a pedestal and, as such, he has an obligation to act responsibly. I doubt very much you understand Bolt's persona and how he's viewed throughout the world if you think he and Lochte are on par. Bolt is viewed as a fun loving athlete who does his best to entertain the crowd, and Lochte is viewed as an attention seeking douche who's not the sharpest tack in the drawer (which he managed to reinforce with his current behavior).

Agree. The PP who thinks Bolt is like Lochte sounds kinda racist. They are not similar. Bolt is way more sophisticated.

I agree with her characterization of Lochte, but her ass kissing of Brazil is a bridge too far. It is still a crime infested country where just the other day, an Australian athlete was ordered to take cash out of an ATM during a robbery. Also, in this incident, a nut job security guard DID pull a gun on the swimmers because they were being "violent." Well, they were all sitting in a car, so how violent could they have been? The author downplays this as a slight overreaction. I know that lefties in the media are supposed to show their adoration for every third world country, but get real!

This is a major problem in the country. Ryan Lochte is accused of doing what he did because of white privilege and Gabby Douglas is accused of acting like "a hood rat" (clearly a racially reference) because she doesn't put her hand over her heart. How about none of this has to do with race. Many white athletes from privileged backgrounds went to Rio and conducted themselves in an exemplary manner. Also, clearly race doesn't dictate whether you put your hand over your heart because Simone Bile had her hand over her heart on the same podium as Gabby, and last night in the athletics medal segment, multiple white athletes didn't have their hand over their hearts. Neither did Michael Phelps in the medal ceremony I watched. I think Ryan Lochte behaved the way he did because he's a self centered jerk, nothing to do with being white. I think Gabby didn't put her hand on her heart like many other American athletes of different races, and she shouldn't be judged more harshly and it shouldn't be attributed to her being black. If you don't like that she has a "stank face," fine, but that has nothing to do with her race. Simone is black and had a perfectly happy face. Maybe Gabby's "stank face" had to do with her disappointment in herself because she hasn't performed well overall. Maybe she's still really young and has a hard time masking her disappointment. I wish Americans would stop looking at race as the overriding cause whenever someone doesn't behave in a manner we deem appropriate. Seriously, this is why we are so divided lately, the willingness to label all Xs as _________. We need to get past this.

The NYT had an article where a Brazilian judge said that the crime of reporting a false charge is NBD, a fine paid to a charity. So the entire incident was blown up by the press.

Also, some were pointing to the video of them returning nonchalantly, to show that nothing happened. Well, Lochte gave an interview with NBC the next day, very shaken about having guns drawn on him. As was eventually admitted by Rio police.

That will never happen. Sorry. For lots of people, everything needs to be framed in terms of race and racism. That is the only lens from which to view the world.

I didn't get the ass kissing of Brazil. I got that Lochte's ridiculous behavior has allowed Brazil to focus on this one very high profile fake incident and hide all the other very credible reports of acts of violence committed in Rio during the Olympics. The British athlete who was mugged barely got any coverage because all eyes were on Lochte. Every time someone brings up the green pool, the contaminated water, poor security, poor attendance, camera crews having equipment stolen....Brazil will refocus everything on how things were exaggerated and point to Lochte. Thanks Ryan for your tremendous contribution to the 2016 Olympics

OK, with a "small" 5 figure donation to a charity, small crimes go away.

The security guard, who pulled a gun on them (which even in Brazil is a bit excessive), won't pay any fee, since he's choosing to remain anonymous.

If you're rich, you pay for justice. If you're affiliated with the police, you get away with anything. Good thing Feigen is getting enough money for his medal to cover the fee, since he's not actually rich.
