Lochte Robbery Story: True or False

The guy is an ass. Hopefully this will all go away now. No more media attention needed for him.

What are the other medal winners doing?

It will prevent Lochte from traveling to any country that has an extradition treaty with Brazil because he may face a demand that another country who may be less reluctant to extradite him to comply with Brazil's demand.

Lochte will be best off to work out what is tantamount to a plea bargain with the Brazilian authorities if the prosecutor decides to accept the Brazilian police's recommendation. He really does not want this sword hanging over his head ready to drop at any moment.

I think he's fine ignoring all of this IF he is done swimming. Presumably he isn't done -- bc otherwise why is he getting a sponsorship from the cough drop company? If he isn't done swimming, he needs the ability to travel internationally bc swimming championships happen all over the world and that's how they keep up with the competition during the off years so that they are competitive for Olympic trials and the Olympics. World championships this year are in Canada; in Hungary in 2017; in China in 2018; and in South Korea in 2019 followed by the 2020 Games in Japan.

Though if I were him I wouldn't be heading back to Brazil to deal with this -- there's a good chance they throw him in jail just to show the world they can. Can't part of the plea bargain be -- we will settle with you/pay fines/do community service if required but we will do it thru the Brazilian consulate in the U.S. -- we are not stepping foot in Brazil??

He can send a lawyer in his place or hire a Brazilian law firm to negotiate on his behalf (I'm not a lawyer, but my DH is Brazilian and says this is how such things are commonly handled with these types of charges). If he goes back to Brasil, he does indeed risk doing time in jail. Believe me when I say that guy would not fare well in a Brazilian jail or prison.

I liked this year's swimming team and have been keeping an eye on what they're up to. Ryan Murphy is back at Berkeley's business school taking 4-5 finance/accounting classes plus resuming college swimming; Simone Manuel is headed back to Stanford but first will be at Arthur Ashe Kids Day at the US Open this weekend; Maya Dirado starts her job at McKinsey after Labor Day; Nathan Adrian is taking 3 weeks off and then resumes training for worlds; Michael Phelps is starting his assistant coaching gig at Arizona State. So apparently lots of others are making constructive use of their time . . . .

Brazil is looking to make a little more money, and they won't rest till he pays up.

This continuation of this by Brazil is making them look horrible. Who would want to go there now?

Absurd!

Even if he pays a fine of $100K it is a drop in the bucket for a country like Brazil. It is the ninth largest economy in the world with a GDP of $1.9 trillion.

Those government officials, and that gym for at-risk youth, would be very happy with a 6 figure donation.

Lmao I was about to say something along those lines, but then I figured why waste time arguing with someone that wouldn't know what corruption is if it hit them in the face. Welcome to Brazil, where the only thing that is consistent is the level of corruption. P.S Brazil has been in a recession since 2014, I'm sure they would love any extra cash flow.

Not the Trump supporters for sure. They would not even know where Brazil is on the map.

Man, that Ryan Lochte, what a jerk! Am I right? Of course I’m right. It’s backed up by journalism. There isn’t a news outlet on the planet that hasn’t carried a story about how Lochte and three other swimmers no one bothers to name got hammered at the Rio Olympics, trashed a bathroom at a gas station, and traumatized innocent security guards, women, children, and plant life alike.

This is what I've been posting, but written so much better. I could care less about Ryan Lochte, but how all of this played out is ridiculous and pathetic and scary.

To be fair, I could believe that most could probably find Brazil on a map, but I'd wager that >75% wouldn't know that the predominant language in the country is not Spanish.

They didn't trash the bathroom, and the "police" held guns at them & wouldn't let them leave until they paid them money.
