Lochte Robbery Story: True or False

Anonymous
Recap for those who haven't heard: Ryan Lochte & three other US Olympic swim team members were allegedly robbed at gun point Sunday evening. Now a Brazil judge has issued an order to seize Lochte & Feigen's passports, as Brazil want to hold both for further questioning.

Lochte's attorney says he is already back in the US and has no plans to return for follow up questioning.

Do you think the account was made up? I can't figure out a motive, and think it's odd that FOUR individuals would be in on a false account. At the same time it seems quite coincidental that out of all of the athletes, this happened to Lochte.

Obviously I don't know, but I have no reason to believe that it was made up. Officials are using video footage of the four appearing relaxed and joking around after the alleged assault as evidence that they weren't assaulted.

If you asked me a week ago what I thought a group of swaggering bros would look like after being robbed at gunpoint I would have said that they would probably be joking around and putting on a show of bravado.

Crime is rampant in Rio. There is nothing unrealistic about the scenario the swimmers described. It's an embarrassment for Brazilian officials, though, so of course they'll jump at any weakness to disprove an alleged attack on Olympic athletes.

Rio is embarrassed by multiple things regarding the Olympics and since this one is so public they're trying to save face.

IMO false; or at least very exaggerated. The part about Lochte arguing with the robber when he had a gun to his forehead is absurd. I know Lochte is dumber than a sack of hammers, but that just doesn't seem reasonable.

I always thought it was a hoax. Something to draw attention to himself. He was too calm, relaxed on the today show when he spoke about it also he spoke very robotic like it was a script he wrote out.

This. Totally. Why on Earth would they lie about this. And this was not just Lochte. He was with a couple other US swimmers.

maybe they were trying to score weed or coke?

He didn't report it or leak it. His mom told the media, and then he later confirmed the story. I kind of feel like he made up a lie to get out of trouble with his mom -- like a 15 year old kid. Could it be possible that he bought some drugs? Would they test for anything after his races were over?

Scenario -
RL calls his mom and asks for more money. She asks what happened to the money she gave him yesterday. He makes up a story about being robbed, even though it went up his nose?

He gets the other guys to corroborate since they were all using and don't want to get caught or stripped of medals.

I believe it happened but he also exaggerated his "bravery".

I was thinking drugs or hookers-- men lie about being robbed a lot in those scenarios (robbed in the act). The only thing about the hooker scenario is-- why bother? Women are in no shortage at Olympic village!

I honestly think he's just too stupid to make it up.

Seriously, the Olympic Village supposedly is a total sexfest. I can't imagine Ryan Lochte or any of the other U.S. swimmers would need to go looking to pay for it.

i don't believe him at all. video shows all four of them coming back w/ their belongings and relaxed.

Something seemed off about the story.

Fwiw my DH was mugged in Brazil at knifepoint. He asked to keep his passport which for security was advised to always keep with him. At that point he wished he had just kept at the hotel. But the dudes let him keep the passport. He lost his wallet and very little cash. Cancelled cards right away. Besides the threat, it wasn't a big deal. He realizes later the guys were never going to hurt him. Hand over the stuff, and it's all good.

If authorities believe all four swimmers lied about the robbery, why did they only target two of them for seizure of passports and further questioning? If you really think they were all part of a conspiracy to file a false police report (there doesn't appear to be any question of whether the other two were with Lochte and Feigen), why wouldn't you pursue all four of them?
