The transit center and basically 90% of the problems during Legetts terms were actually Doug Duncan’s fault. People forget but Duncan raised funds and personally recruited an “end gridlock slate” on the council that included Silverman, Floreen and Leventhal. George Leventhal may pretend to be a liberal champion now, but his career started being in bed with Steve Silverman and he was instrumental in eliminating SSP requirements for developers to pay for roads and other infrastructure where they built homes. It’s actually quite funny that these “smart growth” pro-Thrive folks don’t understand that Leventhal is personally responsible for the sprawl in this county. Ike Leggett was a dignified man who did a good job for this county during a very, very difficult time. He steered us through the financial crisis while cleaning up the mess that Doug Duncan left. |
Correct it's "unaffiliated", just most people don't realize that. Also, about 1/3 of all registered voters in MoCo do not have a party affiliation. We outnumber Republicans. |
The entire state of Maryland has historically had poor governance. You have to remember that 200 years ago the state constitution took away power over the budget from the legislature. It’s hasn’t improved much since. Spiro Agnew was once Baltimore. Nancy Pelosi’s dad and brother ruled Baltimore for 50 years or whatever it was, finally giving up and quitting when they reached their goal of turning the city to sh*t. The assembly created one of the most ridiculous gerrymanders of a Congressional district in the whole country for the sole purpose of giving a dead Senators failson a Congressional seat that he couldn’t fail to win. Montgomery County has been no different. We’ve just traditionally had more money and that may situation may not last long. For jurisdictions in Maryland that pride themselves on “good governance”, you’re probably only looking only at Howard County. |
*Correction: Agnew was once Governor not Baltimore |
This all predates me, but it's interesting. And makes sense. Leggett wasn't perfect. But he could make the trains run. County procurement is horrid, though. I don't know if the Transit Center fiasco was because of corruption or incompetence, but there are no decent project managers in the county, as far as I'm concerned. |
Planning and contracting for the transit center was started under Duncan, who gave the project to Foulger-Pratt and then went on to “consult” for Foulger-Pratt after leaving office. Let us not forget that Duncan is the guy that the Washington Post all but accused of taking a bribe from Jack Abramoff. The county, under Legget, literally warned Foulger-Pratt and Parsons about potential for cracking and they waived off those concerns and then there was cracking. That’s basically the whole story in a nut shell. http://www.actfortransit.org/purple_transit_center.html |
| This is why MoCo keeps economically declining at an exponential rate. MoCo pretty much only has govt and state jobs, and some worthless community activist/nonprofits as employers....that's about it. |
Doug Duncan was also the guy who transformed downtown Silver Spring and the surrounding area by bringing in businesses there. I'm guessing most people don't remember what DTSS was like prior to Whole Foods. |
This is historically inaccurate and really quite frankly a Trumpian style “big lie”. Doug Duncan tried to build an “amusement mall” in DTSS like a mall of the America type situation. When no one wanted to build that project, Peterson basically panicked and asked the community what they wanted and they said they wanted a hardware store and grocery store and so that’s what they got and it has been wildly successful. Since when has Doug Duncan or his flunky George Leventhal or his retread Hans Riemer ever cared about community input in anything? This is honestly a pretty bad attempt to rehabilitate the worst modern political figure in this county who is more responsible for our decline than anyone. |
| He’s 72. He should retire and pass the baton to a fresh face with new ideas. |
I agree. Everyone 72 and older in politics should retire. Joe Biden - 79 Nancy Pelosi - 81 Steny Hoyer - 82 Jim Clyburn - 81 |
Should also add: Ben Cardin - 78 |
They effectively bribe private companies to operate here and when the subsidies end the companies move somewhere else. |
Very simple. MC does not have, and will not have, sufficient resources to support every poor person who wishes to move to MC. MC, of course, should take care of its own. But overly generous anti-poverty programs will encourage more lower income people to move into MC. And more lower income residents will drive up the MC budget, which, in turn, will require tax increases. Higher tax rates will encourage middle and upper income taxpayers to move elsewhere, as they are the ones paying the MC bills. It is called reality. MC is also one of the most taxed jurisdictions in the area, and is losing taxpayers. |

Can’t stand any of these clowns. I won’t vote Republican but will not vote for Elrich, Reimer, Hucker, or Jawando. Their support for Thrive and corresponding blind eye to the impacts of middle class families like mine is mind boggling. Also the complete lack of any substantial business development in MoCo and utter chaos in MCPS. And crime, too, while we’re at it.
Hate to say it, but this is exactly why Democrats will lose big in 2022. Not everyone is as staunchly anti-GOP as I am. And if the county had a decent Republican (non Trumpie / not an anti vaccine / anti CRT racist) centrist I’d vote for them just to take a vote away from the clown show above. |
