As someone who used to live in MoCo and now lives in Nova, let me ask if there has EVER been a competent MoCo government? Ike Leggett was trash. I lived in SS during the transit center debacle. It seems like the county just insists upon destroying itself with poor leadership
Leggett was far better than what we’ve got now.
The transit center and basically 90% of the problems during Legetts terms were actually Doug Duncan’s fault. People forget but Duncan raised funds and personally recruited an “end gridlock slate” on the council that included Silverman, Floreen and Leventhal. George Leventhal may pretend to be a liberal champion now, but his career started being in bed with Steve Silverman and he was instrumental in eliminating SSP requirements for developers to pay for roads and other infrastructure where they built homes. It’s actually quite funny that these “smart growth” pro-Thrive folks don’t understand that Leventhal is personally responsible for the sprawl in this county. Ike Leggett was a dignified man who did a good job for this county during a very, very difficult time. He steered us through the financial crisis while cleaning up the mess that Doug Duncan left.
This all predates me, but it's interesting. And makes sense. Leggett wasn't perfect. But he could make the trains run. County procurement is horrid, though. I don't know if the Transit Center fiasco was because of corruption or incompetence, but there are no decent project managers in the county, as far as I'm concerned.
Planning and contracting for the transit center was started under Duncan, who gave the project to Foulger-Pratt and then went on to “consult” for Foulger-Pratt after leaving office. Let us not forget that Duncan is the guy that the Washington Post all but accused of taking a bribe from Jack Abramoff. The county, under Legget, literally warned Foulger-Pratt and Parsons about potential for cracking and they waived off those concerns and then there was cracking. That’s basically the whole story in a nut shell. http://www.actfortransit.org/purple_transit_center.html
Doug Duncan was also the guy who transformed downtown Silver Spring and the surrounding area by bringing in businesses there. I'm guessing most people don't remember what DTSS was like prior to Whole Foods.
This is historically inaccurate and really quite frankly a Trumpian style “big lie”. Doug Duncan tried to build an “amusement mall” in DTSS like a mall of the America type situation. When no one wanted to build that project, Peterson basically panicked and asked the community what they wanted and they said they wanted a hardware store and grocery store and so that’s what they got and it has been wildly successful. Since when has Doug Duncan or his flunky George Leventhal or his retread Hans Riemer ever cared about community input in anything? This is honestly a pretty bad attempt to rehabilitate the worst modern political figure in this county who is more responsible for our decline than anyone.
