No the bigger issue for Capital families is the potential favoritism in the recruiting process. Most families play Capital because it gives their daughters a tremendous advantage in getting into top schools. If there is a perception that Saints girls are getting an advantage in the recruiting process (which everyone believed was the case when KJ was involved with this at Capital while coaching the Saints) then Capital will begin losing more girls to M&D Skywalkers etc

Capital doesn’t help in the recruiting process, you are on your own in conjunction with your high school coach.

You are nuts. For girls, HS coaches at most provide a reference. It is all done through clubs. And thinking about boys, with the exception of Bordley at Landon, it is also done primarily through the clubs.

OMG ha ha ha ha. You are totally CLUELESS. Capital absolutely does get your daughter recruited. You dont have to do much and most of the highschool coaches do only a little. Its all Capital. That is WHY people want to play for teams like Capital, M&D, Skywakers, YJ, etc... because they have tried an true pipelines to the best college coaches and of all those, Capital is the best.

Cardinal was the absolute worst experience for our daughter. Unless it’s done a 180 and Sarah and the club have gained recruiting knowledge and contacts, I can’t imagine it would be worth the money and effort. Thank God for our daughter’s high school coaches who intervened in the recruiting process for us.

I think Capital is getting an undeserved bad rap here. It is by far the premier club in the area. I just don’t see girls “self-selecting” away from the premier club to somewhere like Cardinal.

Tryouts are really biased for many clubs and while they supposedly have unbiased evaluators that's untrue. And they are especially difficult for a girl who isn't close to the others - like if she didn't play Stars but wants to try out for Capitol. My daughter also plays attack and they have it even worse than middies because they must rely on others to pass the ball. It's so frustrating to attend a tryout and see girls either never pass or only pass to the one or two they have in their circle. For this reason we didn't bother with Capitol.

Agree - its pretty amusing to think a top player would actually chose not to play for Capital if she were good enough to make it. I suspect the kids who are "self-selecting" not to try out are doing so because they are more "self-aware" and know they aren't good enough to make Capital. There are top girls in the DC area who choose not to play for Capital but they play for a top Baltimore team then (Skywalkers or M&D) not a second tier club like Cardinal. Cardinal is a great program but its not for top tier high school lacrosse players.

SSSAS does not play BI in the regular season because they are apart of different divisions. SSSAS had more than 40 games this season. No other team had nearly as many games as they did. The two teams know that they will face one another in statues, so it is a mutual agreement to not play until the end of the season when both teams are at their best.

I agree that for girls the club teams are the primary source for recruiting NOW but I think the shift is coming for girls just like it did for boys. In boys lax there has been a tremendous shift in the DMV over the past 2 years from club supremacy in recruiting to now the hs coaches. It definitely is true for Landon, Bullis and Gonzaga. There are one or two others but I would have to check with my son about which schools those are. In any event, those coaches have moved to the forefront of recruiting with their hs teams.

I think that the same shift will begin to impact girls lax as well. I see a lot of women moving in to coach hs teams, reacting to their past experiences and moving to rectify it by taking stronger roles in the recruiting process. That tight hold of Capitals and KJ is starting to loosen and it cannot come soon enough. More power to these hs coaches if they can put forward a less biased process and be more equitable in their efforts than what we are currently seeing.

Those who value a strong overall athletic program. It's not just about one sport.

Me again. I checked with my son. He has been out of high school now for 2 years and his recruitment at that time was primarily managed by his club coach. But he definitely sees that his several/many of his younger classmates are relying more on their high school coaches than the club coaches. A large part of that is due to the changes in clubs, some long-time clubs are disbanded and other new clubs have shown up on the scene. It will be interesting to see what changes occur with girls lax as more clubs come onto the scene!

I’ve noticed that M&D and skywalkers have girls on their rosters from as far away as Richmond— how does that even work? I’ve got a middle schooler who I’d like to have tryout, but just wondering how families from out of town (DC area) make it work— when are practices etc? Are certain schools favored on those top Baltimore teams or are teams formed entirely on talent? I know and understand the Capital process, just not sure that is what I want for my kid.

The Baltimore clubs we are most familiar with, Skywalkers and M&D, are focused on winning so they leave this other crap out when forming their teams. I don't know how the girl/s from Collegiate/Richmond get to practices or if they even do.

M&D has 2 girls from NC on their team. During the middle school years, they came up for weekends during the spring, and when ever else they could. They stayed with family in Md during the summers so they could practice and play full time during tournament season. It was never truly an issue. Other teams in the area also do similar things, like skywalkers with the girl from Pittsburgh. If the talent is there, they will make it work. That being said, many of the M&D teams do not have stellar coaches, the talent of the girls overshadows that and the reputation of the club brings the talent.
