The Baltimore clubs we are most familiar with, Skywalkers and M&D, are focused on winning so they leave this other crap out when forming their teams. I don't know how the girl/s from Collegiate/Richmond get to practices or if they even do.

M&D has 2 girls from NC on their team. During the middle school years, they came up for weekends during the spring, and when ever else they could. They stayed with family in Md during the summers so they could practice and play full time during tournament season. It was never truly an issue. Other teams in the area also do similar things, like skywalkers with the girl from Pittsburgh. If the talent is there, they will make it work. That being said, many of the M&D teams do not have stellar coaches, the talent of the girls overshadows that and the reputation of the club brings the talent.

And M&D coaches are frequently parents and bring with them all the expected biases and politics. M&D is definitely a very politicized program.

Holy - just checked out Skywalkers roster and I see two people from TN and FL. How on earth does that work? I'm all for having your kid play for a top team but that just seems so extreme to play for a team that far away.

My DD has a teammate who does not live in the area. The teammate is never at any practices though does attend the games/tournaments. I think it is just something that feeds the ego of the club - look how far someone is willing to travel to play with us.

Why would families do this? Games/Tournaments can be every weekend. They would need to purchase airline tickets (the girls from FL, TN, TX!) are not driving up to Baltimore every weekend for a game. What is the upside?

For some people money isn't an issue or they have tons of flier miles and they live in places with no decent teams or coaches. Also, don't forget these are high schoolers so maybe some of them attend boarding schools in our area.

Good lord. Remember when we used to play sports because it was fun?

We have friends that travelled several hours to play for M&D. Their daughter will be playing this weekend at Stony Brook. The mom said they lived in their car - homework and dinner during the week- but that it was totally worth it. She also said the other families were supportive and they're still friends with most of the team. Yellow Jackets and M&D are the best Clubs in the country so I'm not surprised that people are willing to travel.for top level training.

The high school girls rent a house together for the summer in Baltimore.

Even the local girls? Do one of the parents stay with them? Do the out of state girls only play in the summer tournaments and not spring/fall season?

That’s great! Nice that it (clearly) worked out. I’d place skywalkers right there in the mix with YJ and M&D. I guess it’s really no different than any travel team if you take practice out of it! Maybe we could make this work...would have to get my kid there and see if she makes the cut first.

One of the challenges with M&D, Skywalkeds, and TLC is that their programs start in elementary school and goes all the way thru junior year in high school. This means that there is a limited amount of open spots each year, if any. After freshman year in high school I think they stop having tryouts.

The out of state high school girls get a house together in Baltimore for the summer. The moms come with them. Or they stay with local family. Fall season some play and some don't. High school doesn't have spring league.

That is a high level of commitment for their team!

How do they play fall season? Fly in or drive a long distance just for the weekend games?

Fall season in high school is just tournaments. They fly to the 4-5 Fall tournaments. They aren't local for most teams anyway.
