So let's take them all. How about those fleeing the Middle East? Let's take them too. Sudan, bring them all here. Open boarders for all.

I love how you throw out some random articles that actually prove you are wrong and not right. 1. MC is the #2 where illegal immigrants are fleeing to right now. 2. Arizona has had a huge decrease in the last 0-9 years because of laws put in place. Only one county in AZ has more illegal aliens than MC but that county (Maricopa) has a 4 million population to our 1 million. So technically we have almost 10% illegal alien population to their 4.5% and they are right by the border!!! Same with Harris County, Tx and other huge counties. The number looks big but the percentage isn't there. And the ones that are close to 10% have had an actual decrease while MC has had an increase in the last 0-9 years. 3. MC is a sanctuary county in a sanctuary state. We have Case De MD, government services, reduced tuition, free drivers licenses for illegals, etc... 4. MC still has a higher percentage of illegals than FC. It is not actual numbers. It is % of county population. Overall the state of Virginia has a very small percentage and can overall absorb it better than MD. 5. Your links are outdated and only show illegal immigration from either Central American or Asian countries. We have a huge illegal population from the middle east in the last few years that other states like Texas, Ca, Az do not have. 6. And most importantly, once you take into consideration the actual population of a state to the population of illegals within that state, California is the only state that beats out MD and we are basically tied with Texas. And once again, here we are miles and miles away from a border while Tx and Ca sit right on it. You do realize your poll from the Blaze was just actual numbers within a state and not the percentage, correct? Huge concerns here and the articles and chart by the OP proves it. Montgomery County is harboring an illegal alien population of 10% right now and the numbers are not slowing down. Md is in big trouble. |
You hit the nail on the head. Our once good and well run school is overflowing with immigrants. Our principal says there are so many kids coming in the past two years and there is no where to put them. The school is running on reputation right now but it won't last much longer if this keeps up. And current policy says it will. It wasn't this way when my kid was in Kindergarten. This rush of multitudes of kids is new. The Principal did not specify where the kids are coming from but one look at my child's class and it is clear as day what is happening. The classes are stuffed with Spanish speaking kids with very little to poor English skills. Most are new arrivals in the past 2 to 3 years. My kid is begging to go to a private school so he can get time with the teachers whom he says focus on the spanish kids to the exclusion of the others because those kids need more help. They are beginning to outnumber the natural born citizens in every class. We don't want our kids isolated in a private school, away from their community (these kids are bused in) but we are not seeing any other options except to move. MD needs to crack.down on illegal immigration and send them packing elsewhere. If we don't, the people with means are going to pack up and leave and the tax base is going to evaporate. The ship is sinking and Montco seems to be doing it to the citizens purposefully. Soon Montco will be a welfare state. |
| Even if you out policies in place to make Maryland unfriendly to illegals, you'd still have tons of native born Spanish speakers in classrooms. |
Judging by your post you'd think MoCo was the only sanctuary county in the country. Not true. Google it. If you read the VA school forums, you'd see that FCPS parents are also complaining about illegal immigrants. If my link is so outdated, please provide your own. Cite your recent sources, then maybe I'll agree with you. |
Come on. There were a few Spanish speaking kids (like 3 to 5) in the classrooms before but they were intermixing with the native born children and the other foreign nationals so there was still a sense of cohesion and community. Now the numbers are much larger, the class sizes are now bursting, they are not integrating as much, preferring to create their own group with whom they speak Spanish most of the day. And the other kids are aware of it. The system can't handle it and it's MD policies that are hurting current tax payers and the future generation of citizens with crowded schools of illiterate illegal kids who require lots of resources and attention. A lot of damage has been done in only 4 to 5 years. It is alarming. |
How would the wealthy schools seceding from the larger district keep the middle class? |

Does anyone have stats on immigrants in DC, N VA to compare?
The thing is, I want to live near DC. I'm in policy - it's my career and I love it. I love the DC area and working in the city. My spouse's industry is also very DC-based (could move to 2 other large cities realistically, but have NO desire to live in those - life with kids is much more manageable here). So saying Howard County has fewer immigrants doesn't do it for me - we don't want to live out there and have us commuting for hours, even if it's only 2-3 days a week since we both telecommute some. It's just further out than we want to be and not what we want in housing, neighborhood, walkability, etc. Same with other states - we want to be here. So I'm more interested in how these rates compare to other areas in the DC region. |
This is an interesting comment, because "at a glance" doesn't tell you anything about performance. It tells you how many Black and Brown kids are at a school, how many kids receive ESOL support, but nothing about how those kids perform. So, if you want to know a school's demographics, At a Glance will tell you. If you want to know how kids actually do at that school, though, you will need to look at the PARCC scores that are not reported on the form. What you'll see in most places is that middle class kids do well no matter where they are, and poor kids do poorly. That's why the sub-data is really helpful. |
+1 The reason MoCo is so desirable isn't just the schools. It's the proximity to DC and the ease of access to the Metro. That's not going to change. People may opt for private schools but they're not going to leave areas that are walkable with access to the city. Also, others have commented on the exponential growth of new housing developments. In SS, these new units are NOT cheap. The new EYA townhouses that just went up started at $900k and sold out. All the new condos going up near DTSS will be in a much higher price bracket, even with the required % of AH. Single family home prices are starting in the $700s in the nice neighborhoods. SS is awesome because of its diversity, but not many immigrants will be able to afford to stay here. And as a few others have noted, there's a very large number of empty nesters who bought low and will sell high to families that can afford the prices. |
| I really don't understand people threatening "if the schools get any more full of immigrants we're going to leave and then they'll be sorry!" Public schools are there to educate the kids who are there. They really don't care if you pull your kid. And I don't buy the argument that property values will fall and school funding will tank. There are a lot of poorly rated schools in DC where the surrounding homes are incredibly expensive. People are always going to want to live in close-in areas with good commutes. You guys can worry about test scores and property values all you want, but rest assured that MCPS officials are not sitting around worrying that wealthy white people will leave. Many administrators are actually not wealthy white people themselves. |
From what I've seen, there are tons of educated Asian immigrants in mcps, too. And agree with other PP about new development - they are damned expensive. I don't think illegal immigrants will be the ones buying up those properties. |
Prince Georges County also has the proximity to DC and multiple Metro stops. Within 7 years, I see MoCo and Prince Georges having roughly equal housing prices and comparably ranked schools. |
Um, school funding has already tanked and what little they get, goes towards ESOL and FARMS and not to building more schools. Hence a decade of overcrowded schools. My oldest is 15. Youngest is 6. ESOL has quadrupled in our school and FARMS has tripled. Less than 10 years. This is a Rockville ES. Every year the office is flooded with kids that just show up and never registered for school the first few days. They increase the ratios and the school can't get an allocation for a teacher as easy once school starts. Never mind the fact that they can't speak English. If MCPS was funded do well, why is there so much overcrowding and continued delays on building projects. Wouldn't all these new people mean an abundance of taxes towards the school? Nope |
