Hear from child (did you have reading group today) as well as observe. I volunteer once a week in her class since K. |
I rather not because it could easily tag me but is not a W school and not a focus or Title 1 school. Basic mid-county 20% FARMS school. |
W schools will get theirs with Westbard and then a redistricting...give it a year or two. |
Not PP, but my DC learned how to count money in first grade (though we did it at home, too), and learned how to tell time (including half past, quarter past, x before the hour) in 2nd grade. I also volunteered in the class so I saw what they were learning. This is in a non W cluster, not title 1/focus school. |
I have seen the exact same thing as you. So much so that I wonder if we are at the same school. Except our teacher is super nice, very smart and I like her a lot. I volunteer twice a week, once in the class and once at lunch and recess where it is like the Wild Wild West because there are not enough staff supervising. If I have time, I will help out in the class then too. I never had much of a problem with "immigration" because I never personally saw the issues on the ground until I saw our school take a complete turn in the past 3 years. The teacher can not keep up and can not communicate with a quarter of the class and spends most of the times focused on them. They are 8 year olds and are still working on 4 plus 4. The class also has an ESOL teacher who comes in a works with the Spanish speakers exclusively for almost an hour while the rest of the kids get 5 minutes in groups of 7 to 8 with the teacher and then move to stations to teach themselves or socialize. It is so concerning. So I have to come here to vent because I feel helpless. |
You are lucky. At some schools, they no longer welcome parent volunteers - don't want people to see what really goes on. |
