Peloton Holiday ad sparks criticism

I don't get the hate. I wouldn't have thought anything of that ad.

Same, my husband said how stupid it was, but I felt mildly annoyed but also mildly inspired to get to the gym (I don't like at-home exercise).

That's how you perceived it.

That’s how most people perceived it per the backlash.

Yes, and more importantly, it's how the large stockholders who dumped the stock perceived it. All of the defensive DCUM Peloton owners in this thread are irrelevant and also out of touch. (I own a Peloton, but I am not blind and see the issues with the ad.)

I just got a message that they're lowering the cost of the monthly digital membership, which is interesting timing.

That message only went out to app users. If you actually had a Peloton, you wouldn’t have gotten it.

It went out to everyone who has the app installed. I have the app installed, because I used the outdoor runs. Do you understand that people can have both the app installed and simultaneously own a bike?

We have some marketing geniuses in this thread, I see.

What does that have to do with marketing? I have a Peloton too and can tell you there’s a ton of confusion right now about why that price notification went out.

Did you get an email? I didn't. What are they lowering the price to?

It was an app notification.

Hahaha, and I just got another app notification saying whoops, ignore that, we didn't mean to send it. What a clown show.

I think the twitter backlash is pretty funny, but I also expected to see something worse when I finally watched the ad.

I just kind of didn't get what they claim she got out of the year? She still seemed unsure of herself and mousy at the end.

We have a treadmill and maxtrainer in our house. We bought the treadmill as a gift to ourselves one year. My husband bought the maxtrainer off craigslist for much less than original price.

Pelotons are stupid.

Says a fat person who can't afford one.

ok, so I just looked at the tread - it's a treadmill with a tv monitor? Not that the bike is much different, really.

What makes them so much cooler than the machines you can buy at sporting goods stores?

I'm not the PP, but I'd actually have to say that Peloton *owners* are stupid. They are wildly overpriced for what you get. Whoever saw that market opening and drove through it is a genius. You can get a great stationary bike for a fraction of the cost, and then just watch free exercise videos while you cycle.

People that buy those are idiots.

I hope SNL mocks this up!

Nothing, except that they cost more and you get to keep paying monthly to subscribe to the classes. Oh goodie.

I just bought a Peloton and I really like the metrics tracking on the bike. I've done other indoor cycling for about 15 years and have always been annoyed with not really understanding what effort the instructor is asking for. I also think the videos will keep me engaged for way longer than just a stationary bike where I need to find other classes. It probably is overpriced, but it also has me working out regularly, which I wasn't doing before.

Nothing, it's all psychological. It gives people status and they feel like they're part of an elite community.

DH has owned various pieces of cardio equipment and never used them. Got a Peleton and uses it every day. No difference between it and the three other bikes he's owned, it's just because it's a Peleton.

But that's 99% of marketing. I don't need this expensive MacBook Pro that I'm currently typing on, and I could have gotten a perfectly fine laptop for half the price. I'll totally admit I'm a sucker.

It is more comparable to spin classes than it is another piece of exercise equipment. If you like Soul Cycle - it is like that but from the convenience of your home when you want. Top notch instructors, etc. Not everyone's cup of tea, but no need to rag on it or the people that use it.

I thought the ad was stupid because it looked like it was filmed by a horror producer. I seriously wondered if we'd find out the woman was dead at the end.

That said - didn't think it was sexist and they shouldn't have lost 10% of their stock net worth because of it.

Peloton is probably "sorry, not sorry".

Well played.

They lost $940 million in a single day because of one ad.

Trust me - they're sorry.
