I don't' think I'm confusing anything. Scroll down to Enrolled by county. 670 from FCPS, 200 Loudon, etc., down to zero or one from the outlying west and southern counties. http://digital.uvamagazine.org/articles/2020-insight/. I don't know anyone who has turned down UVA for another school except for one truly exceptional student who received both the Jefferson Scholar offer and Princeton. He chose Princeton full freight over the Jefferson (free ride).

You must be joking. UVA is a safety school for those in serious running for Ivies or top SLACs. Many of the kids who are accepted into those schools turn down UVA.

You must be joking. UVA is a safety school for those in Cs. Many of the kiserious running for Ivies or top SLAds who are accepted into those schools turn down UVA.

The only applicants in that category who seriously think they are going to get into HYP with 40,000+ applicants and a 6.2% acceptance rate are URMs (Nigerian Americans are hot this year), a few extraordinary athletes, some first-generations, and a host of international kids with extraordinary test scores. Even legacies have only a 10-30% chance of getting in and that's only if mom and dad gave $500K to 1.5 million. No one who has gone through this process "kiserious [sic] runs for Ivies". It's a lottery. You throw out 10 to 15 applications and hope your application catches the eyes of one of the 50 readers hired by the admissions office. And if your child has the choice between an Ivy and UVA, then the family has to sit down and decide "can we really pay $72,000 in after-tax dollars a year versus $26,000 for four or five years". Not many families can do that anymore, hence the dramatic increase of applicants to UVA and other state schools. The UC system just announced it may move to limit OOS to only 20% nationally and internationally in order to protect the Californians who have paid into the system. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-uc-limit-nonresident-students-20170306-story.html. UVA is still at roughly 55 to 60% in-state/40% OOS and international. That may change as more and more Virginians get angry that their kids can't get into VA schools. Several state legislators have introduced bills that would increase the no. of UVA in-state seats.

For a kid in the top 5% of the class in state, UVA is a safety. Plenty will choose other schools over UVA (not HYPSM) without paying $72k. And some will pay $72k because they can.
    Anonymous
No. Top 5% doesn't mark you as a safety. almost everyone at UVA is top 10% plus extraordinary ECs and test scores.
Stats for UVA class of 2021. DC is in class of 2020. 93% of the class was in the top-ten of their class. 94.6% of class of 2021 is in the top ten. From all 50 states and 84 nations. http://admissionsintel.com/uva-admits-9957-for-class-of-2021/

You haven't been through the game, have you? So it goes like this. Your child is one of 420 in the junior year at Langley High School. You sit down with the college counselor and your child's B+ A- record and suggest UVA. They play a "I love lucy" laugh-track back at you and then suggest CNU, JMU, GMU (need a 3.9 now) , etc etc etc. Langley is going to only support those top 50 students in a class of 420 who have the 4.0+ GPA and test scores and ECs. Who writes the letters of recommendation? The faculty at the director off the college counselor? Who sends the test scores and GPA and notes from school? The college counselor. Who makes sure the group of 50 "stars" are present when HYP and UVA come through? The college advisor? Who helps coordinate with English teachers to write the essays. The college counselor. Yes, you can technically APPLY to William & Mary and UVA but no one at the high school is going to write good letters for your B student. They aren't going to pick up a phone and say "I'm sending you my strongest class every this year, watch out for XYZ". They aren't going to make sure that your letters are glowing. Apply away! Good luck even getting your transcript sent properly.

PP here and I find this funny, because yes - I have indeed "been through the game" with an older child. Who, coincidentally, graduated from Langley. None of what you're saying rings true at all.

Well, then, if you are so knowledgeable, please tell me how the single college counselor at Langley is going to support your B student in their application to UVA? Are they going to rustle up those great letters of recommendation? Make sure you meet the right representations? You do know the schools signal their best and brights to particular schools every year. The moment UVA seens your kid's B application come through with late or lukewarm letters and no phone calls you think your "eye roll" is going to work? Please tell me. I'm dying to know.

I think you are painting a pretty nasty picture of counselors. They don't "rustle up" recommendations, the student does. Counselors definitely try to manage expectations when it comes to the really selective schools, but they don't submit the application or control the submission of anything but their letter and the transcript. And I'm pretty sure they write ONE recommendation, load it to Naviance, and it gets sent to the schools the student selects on the Common App.

You are being hopelessly naive. Go back and look for an extensive, long thread about how NCS controls which students get to apply to HYP, UVA, etc. Those counselors actually decide which students will get to apply with the school's backing and which won't. And some parents were furious that even though they were legacies, STA and NCS wouldn't support their kid's application. Sure! Go throw $100 at it plus the cost of reporting your scores. But the Langley and McLean, NCS and STA teachers are not going to be thrilled when your B student asked for a letter of recommendation. And, no, the student doesn't do it, it is coordinated by the college counselor. You (parents) meet with him or her at end of junior year and once at the beginning of senior year. You pray that they have some idea they know what they are doing (often the don't). By then you've read at least 10 books so have a better handlle on things than they do and far more time to devote to your child than they do. They review your list. If they think your child is reaching too high, they pull out the Naviance charts and show you how your child doesn't have a chance of being one of the lucky 60 at Langley or McLean who are supported in their applications to UVA. Go find that thread about this happening in privates too. School heads and administrators are NOT going out on a limb for your B kid if they don't think they have a chance to get in. The job of the counselor is to steer you to more suitable choices.

Lol.....you're delusional. Only 43% of students who are accepted by UVA actually attend....that's what's called the admissions yield rate.

Are you serious? At my kid's HS, UVA accepts 40-50 every year and only 20-25 go. UVA is a safety for plenty of kids.
