Well, then, if you are so knowledgeable, please tell me how the single college counselor at Langley is going to support your B student in their application to UVA? Are they going to rustle up those great letters of recommendation? Make sure you meet the right representations? You do know the schools signal their best and brights to particular schools every year. The moment UVA seens your kid's B application come through with late or lukewarm letters and no phone calls you think your "eye roll" is going to work? Please tell me. I'm dying to know.
I think you are painting a pretty nasty picture of counselors. They don't "rustle up" recommendations, the student does. Counselors definitely try to manage expectations when it comes to the really selective schools, but they don't submit the application or control the submission of anything but their letter and the transcript. And I'm pretty sure they write ONE recommendation, load it to Naviance, and it gets sent to the schools the student selects on the Common App.
You are being hopelessly naive. Go back and look for an extensive, long thread about how NCS controls which students get to apply to HYP, UVA, etc. Those counselors actually decide which students will get to apply with the school's backing and which won't. And some parents were furious that even though they were legacies, STA and NCS wouldn't support their kid's application. Sure! Go throw $100 at it plus the cost of reporting your scores. But the Langley and McLean, NCS and STA teachers are not going to be thrilled when your B student asked for a letter of recommendation. And, no, the student doesn't do it, it is coordinated by the college counselor. You (parents) meet with him or her at end of junior year and once at the beginning of senior year. You pray that they have some idea they know what they are doing (often the don't). By then you've read at least 10 books so have a better handlle on things than they do and far more time to devote to your child than they do. They review your list. If they think your child is reaching too high, they pull out the Naviance charts and show you how your child doesn't have a chance of being one of the lucky 60 at Langley or McLean who are supported in their applications to UVA. Go find that thread about this happening in privates too. School heads and administrators are NOT going out on a limb for your B kid if they don't think they have a chance to get in. The job of the counselor is to steer you to more suitable choices.
