We visited UVA this weekend...

OP, big state flagship (and LACs with strong frat culture like Dartmouth) probably aren't for you/your kid. That's fine.

Uva starts the party Thursday. Sunday is study day.

That culture and setting historically breeds a stinking ignorance and anti-intellectualism that is antithetical to the objectives of higher education.

I agree with you, OP. UVA has a lovely campus but needs to rein in its Greek scene. It's gross.

I attended Oxford University, thanks very much.

Bahahahahaha! You do know all we have to do is google 'Oxford drinking parties,' right?? Wow. Not very bright.

So, UVA wasn't the school for you guys. There really is no need to put the school down or the Charlottesville area. The solution is to go look at other schools which may be a better fit. That seems a better use of time rather than posting about it on this forum. I'm sure there is a school that will be a good fit your kid, but make sure to get some input from him/her since they will be the one to actually attend the school. The overbearing and opinionated parent who doesn't respect a child's wishes never really wins in the end...

Also, I'm assuming you are looking at the UK for schools since you went to Oxford. Maybe that is the better option and more of what you are seeking.

Agree with you, OP. Everyone I know who went to UVA graduated with a serious drinking problem and, in most cases, racist/misogynistic views. I am in-state but have no interest in sending my child there.

That has got to be tough. UVA is some of the best education you can buy around here, in state, from what I hear. But I could see the drinking culture could be a turn off. I went to Duke in the 1980s and that culture prevailed there. BUT, there were pockets of all other types of people--you just needed to find them. artists, activists, computer nerds, intellectuals, etc. I am sure you can find your group anywhere, even UVA. The drinkers/greeks are probably just the largest and noisiest and easiest to spot.

Best education you can get at an Animal House. I agree and second this declaration.

This is true. But it takes a particularly mature and focused kid to see past the "noisiest and easiest to spot" culture. I wish my kid was this particularly mature type of kid but, unfortunately, I can see him getting very carried away with whatever culture is prevalent around him.

Pardon me, Animal University.

Charlottesville has a shockingly high violent crime rate.
