Why are you picking this story instead of the many MURDERS perpetrated by the gang?

Can you understand that a story where the victim is physically unharmed is less newsworthy than a story where the victim is beheaded and buried in Wheaton Regional park?

This story IS noteworthy. So is the Wheaton one. The local TV news stations are covering this story. The local papers that have endorsed the PL have not. The PL will be a main artery connecting gang ridden high crime areas to a low crime non gang infested one. This was a Purple Line worker who fortunately escaped with his life. Procedures were changed. Newsworthy for many reasons and also forshadowing what to expect in new Bethesda. I am very concerned with attempts to bury this story. It does not fit the PL narrative that the politicians want people to believe.

I've lived in Silver Spring, now Bethesda, and support the Purple Line, because you know what? The area is growing whether we like it or not and more transportation is just necessary. It won't lighten congestion on the roads because there will be that many more people on the Line AND on the road. So it's essential to avoid clogging the roads.

MS-13 has been entrenched in the area for many years now, and WaPo and other news outlets in our area have done long features on it. You are delusional if you think that we're not taking this gang seriously or reporting on it. It will have no effect on transportation plans, however, because we need those plans more than anything else. And to think that this gang will somehow develop more with added transport is insane. Gangs are smothered by shutting off their financial sources, and since this gang is international, it will take some time.

Well, CASA Montgomery claims that gang members are only out to hurt other people from El Salvador or Honduras Et al and not the general population.
Their viewpoint is apparently that their own people’s lives don’t matter (how horrifying) and the gang violence doesn’t affect them so we should not be concerned. So, it is significant as this was not another gang or community member.

We all realize that this is why the MoCo council voted to raise the minimum wage, right? In a patheticly useless attempt to stem gang violence as if people earning $15/hour instead of $11/hour is going to change everything. There won’t be gangs hitting people up for money if the guys are making $15/hour?

What we need are a completely new set of politicians in MoCo, hopefully some that turn off the spigot of immigrants coming from gang infested nations. The oneszin office now roll out the red carpet for them with disastrous effects for everyone in the county (including the immigrants from El Salvador and Honduras etc) .

Yes, and our family is struggling to survive here and to support our own family members, but MoCo is raising our property taxes by 10% (despite our real estate values clearly falling) to fund trying to control the gangs. And to find all of these centers set up to care for these people . Can you maybe see why that is infuriating to many of us?
There was no reason to bring in this many immigrants from these areas anyway - no reason. Very shortsighted and costly for the citizens of Montgomery County.

There are also buses.

What are ms-13's activities in moco? Why would they want to travel west?

They want to use their ill gotten gains on the better shopping and restaurants to be found in Bethesda. And they need the PL because while they can manage to get cars, they don't like dealing with parking in downtown Bethesda.

Oh, and the replacement of the old gravel trail with a new paved trail will also bring more MS 13 to Bethesda. Unlike many other hispanics in the region, they do not ride mountain bikes, only narrow tired road bikes. Have you never heard of the Tour de Plunder?

More likely they believe that if their own people cannot move here, they will still be victims of these gangs in El Salvador, etc. Therefore they support policies to reduce crime, but not policies to keep anyone from migrating here from those countries.

It’s not working for everyone to all move to one place. These jerks are threatening to kill and maim theurcrematives back home too. If they are doing it here you know they’re doing it x1000 back home.
It is a short sighted terrible policy to relocate large numbers of refugees from these areas, or any areas really, all in one place.
These small time politicians from Montgomery county made a huge mistake and they aren’t even intelligent enough to own up to it and fix it. Not that I think they are capable of fixing it (not a chance).
It has and will continue to cause much suffering.

not everyone is moving to one place. Still loads of people living in Central America. Refugees move to other rich countries and some to not so rich countries (lots of Syrians have moved to Jordan)

Do you really think they will use the direct line to come to Bethesda to dine and shop? Silver Spring has better dining and shopping in my opinion. This area is a treasure trove to a blood thirsty gang...upper middle class and wealthy homes to invade and well to do people with zero street smarts to rob in the street or get caught in the crossfire. And no, your white priveledge is not going to protect you. Hispanics aren't the only victims. It is all about access.

To MS13, a victim is a victim, no matter the color, as long as there is something to be gained. Bethesda Chevy Chase crime stats will go way up, property values will go way down. The tax base will flee the high taxes and crime and move farther out.

So roll out the purple carpet, the change you all seek after years of resenting Bethesda's wealth is coming and the tax base will finally have had enough. The irony is as the tax base dwindles, politicians are going to find it even hard to pay for their 6 billion dollar train.

WHY WOULD PEOPLE TAKE A TRAIN TO COMMIT A CRIME? Are they going to sit on the platform with all of their “loot” and wait 10 minutes for the next train going eastbound?

Anonymous wrote:No mention of this in Bethesda Magazine or the WaPo. We can only guess why. This happened way back in October and the story was ignored until DC news stations picked it up. Even now with DC media coverage, crickets from our local news. Bad publicity for their pet project. Anyone who says Bethesda violent crime will not go up when this thing is finished has their head in the clouds. One of the teen gang members has since been murdered. This is frightening.

Your post was 12/28. Bethesda Magazine wrote about it on 12/27, even though it didnt' take place in Bethesda:

As for the Purple Line bringing crime to Bethesda, it's just replacing existing bus routes or making shorter rail trips there (like from College Park). You think the criminals are holding back because their commute time to Bethesda is 45 minutes and would be reduced to 20 minutes with the Purple Line?

What's next, do criminals scramble for an EZPass Flex so they can use the HOV lanes for free on their gang-banging trips?

You really don't get out too much do you? Here's what happens in the real world.

https://www.abc15.com/news/region-phoenix-metro/central-phoenix/data-crime-increasing-in-some-neighborhoods-along-phoenix-light-rail

http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2015/09/10/serious-crimes-happening-on-light-rail-trains-platforms/

There's much more than just these two recent examples. Statistics show crime near light rail is high across the country. Tbat is why this story is news worthy. The PL is coming from a gang infested areas and will bring with it crime and gang activity.

Op you are crazy!!! Surely you realize the METRO runs straight into the heart of Bethesda. All kinds of gangsters can hop on and storm your Barnes and Noble and right now, if they wanted. Why do you think they are instead waiting patiently for the purple line before they unleash their mayhem? To save time on commuting?? Lol you are too funny.

The red line already serves Bethesda and comes from some pretty bad parts of town.
