If they are so terrified they need to move back where they came from or a neighboring country that will accept them. Many have kids here just to stay here. I am hispanic and when the going got tough here my parents moved back home despite me being a us citizen and parents legal residents at the time now theyre citizens. |
Even calling them illegal immigrants is a compromise. They used to be called illegal aliens, but I suppose that was too negative. But there certainly are illegal immigrants - they immigrated here illegally. This "undocumented immigrant" is just to be extra respectful to people with no regard for our immigration laws. Also, what you say about their being terrified of being caught won't apply if and when gives blanket amnesty. They they WILL come out of the woodwork, claiming benefits for the American-born babies. |
I am aware of all that. I still believe its unnecessarily derogatory. Undocumented means literally the same thing. I don't know why it bothers the other side so much that a slightly more humanizing term is used. I would not object to you calling them criminals. |
That's great for you. Frequently they cannot afford to move back. Or when choosing between living in fear in the shadows here versus living in fear of being killed by a gang there, they prefer the bureaucratic villain over the gangster. |
Blanket amnesty is never going to happen again. Political suicide. And if there is one thing that all politicians are it is self interested. You do not get to dictate how I refer to a population. I could refer to you as a human, a person, a woman/man, a troll. In English we have a lot of synonyms. I choose undocumented immigrant and I am not making a compromise, I am using language as I choose, my right via the first amendment as a US citizen. |
DP. So it's OK to call them criminal immigrants but not illegal immigrants? Aren't we splitting hairs here? Also, we wouldn't want to be insulting to the criminals (you said that word was OK), now would we? This is political correctness run amok. |
Ok for me. Why is it so important to you that I use the term that you use? |
They cant afford? Didnt they come here to make money? Of course they can afford it! They just choose not to because they are really ECONOMIC MIGRANTS not damsels in distress with no choices like YOU are making them out to be. |
Frequently they come here to survive. You are clouded by your family's personal history so you can't see that not everything is as cut and dry as you think. Sure some of them are economic migrants, but you cannot paint this entire population with one brush. |
Um no. All of them are economic migrants. Are you hispanic? You should know this. |
I am not hispanic but I work in immigration. This is just patently false. You think all the unaccompanied minors are economic migrants? Yes certainly when they get here people look for work which is usually transient in nature or under the table due to their lack of status but the motivations for coming to the united states are not all financial. Just because you are hispanic does not mean you speak for all undocumented immigrants. How unbelievably arrogant to think that you do. |
The unaccompanied minors who cant work are the kids of illegal economic migrants from central america. Family had been in dc since nixon days and i did not say i speak for all but i know many and know the circumstances and know the changes that went on and how different the migrants from years ago were compared to today. Instead of breastfeeding central america like mexico refuses to do there should be tougher border control and obviously these central american countries are doing nothing or even care to stop their citizens from migrating north. |
Words have meaning: "illegal alien" is descriptive. If you or anyone else takes offense to words that are merely descriptive, then you are suffering from irrational political correctness. Undocumented is not literally the same thing. You can be an undocumented person in the US but be a natural born citizen. |
Oh really? How? The only circumstance I can think of is persons born in the US outside of a hospital or any medical care. Extraordinarily small number of people. Undocumented immigrant is pretty descriptive and eliminates that tiny population I just allowed for. |
