I find it really telling that many of you assume that all refugees are ignorant, uneducated women who have zero rights. Not all women from those countries have no agency. That is a gross assumption.

No, idiot, it is not a "gross assumption." I've lived in several of those countries, and yes, the majority of women in the societies from which the US receives the most refugees ARE uneducated and with very little rights. I am embarrassed for you, but I also doubt there is any hope for you to really understand how the greater world works at this point. God. Just take your privilege and idiocy and go get a manicure or something, OP. You should probably keep your mouth shut on topics you don't understand in the future to avoid embarrassing yourself further.

OP here - I asked a legitimate question, I'm not embarrassed about it. I'm embarrassed that you seem to not be able to have a rational conversation about things. I would check that anger.

Work on your IQ first. You asked a very dumb question and got rightfully called out on it.

It's an honest question, and I got honest answers ... unsurprisingly, not everyone agrees. You should check your white privilege that allows you to think that just because you lived abroad you know everything. Still waiting on the source that says the majority of women refugees are uneducated. Please do share.

Who said I'm white, you nitwit? You really are embarrassing yourself.

To be fair to the PP, you sure do sound white.

What does it mean, to sound white? I am the PP above and I happen to be an Indian immigrant.

It means your views are those of fascists.

Who else here does not believe she is an "Indian immigrant"?

I don't who the OP is. I am the PP who said I'm not white, in response to OP. I happen to be Indian.

No, you aren't. I don't believe you. If you were really, as you say, "an Indian immigrant", you would have some understanding of the issues that plague women in the countries from which most of our migrants come, because these are prevalent in your own country of origin: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jul/02/india-most-dangerous-country-women-survey I have friends who really are from India, and though their families were more privileged than most, they were unable to fail to notice (as you have) the horrible plight of many, many women in their country, or the significance of women's rights concerns in these situations. You are no more from India than I am.

you are mixing this poster up with someone else.

You are insane. I called out the OP for not understanding the issues that refugees face. I am Indian and am well aware of the problems in my country and how women/people don't always have free choice for having children. I'm not sure what you're ranting about.

Please educate yourself. Start here. Come back and post your response after you've read these articles:

Thank you for the links. What I gleaned from them is that Latin America is basically a rapist culture. So again, why do we let males come? Makes that are used to taking a woman by force with no punishment? Yes there will always be American rapists but our country has laws. It doesn’t breed rapists like Latin America does (I will cite the links you provided above for my proof on that.)

Brett Kavanaugh.

Our country has laws? Yes. But the enforcement of those laws are weak

Something seems to be missing from this discussion.

Refugees come from somewhere, someplace that at one time was considered home. Home might have been an exceptionally difficult place, but it was still a place where people live, people have families, people grow up, people have more families. In some cases, stable communities have been ripped apart over a relatively short period of time, such as by war. In other places live has always been more difficult and becomes progressively more difficult, but people still live real lives, which means they have grandmothers and aunts and uncles and fall in love, but at some point weighing the difficulty and danger of staying where they are against the difficulty and danger of trying to go somewhere else, the choice to leave is made. Life where someone lives in a difficult and dangerous place is tolerable until it isn't. And sometimes that choice is made given the prospect of seeing your young children face life in a place that is becoming more and more hazardous.

Besides that are the additional factors such as trafficking, rape, lack of access to birth control, and in other ways having limited control over one's life and circumstances. Also, many refugees--how many I have no idea--are attempting to join family and extended family members in the US, with the hope that lives for them and their children can get better.

I guess I don't really understand if you are in an environment where you need to flee your circumstances why you would continue to have children. Why would you continue to bring new children into those situations?

By want something to want and need them, and a baby provides that to them. This has been studied for decades in poor countries and in generational poverty groups in America.

Those populations are not the same as refugees. You’d be shocked how many refugees are people who were once middle class. This includes women who thought they would be childfree or have two or fewer children. Women who were lawyers, doctors, engineers, and entrepreneurs. Then, something unthinkable happens to force them to seek shelter in another country. These are not women who need a baby because they have nothing else that is their own.

As she reported on the Syrian war at its peak and traveled to refugee camps across Europe, she met hundreds of women who’d decided to flee their homeland. Most were well-educated and middle-class. Some had worked themselves; a point of pride. Now, they lived in tents or cheap metal structures, at best. Amanpour watched them and wondered: “They’ve survived the war, but how does the heart survive? How does love survive? How does sex and the desire to be intimate survive?”

A need for Intimacy, love for a spouse, and desire for children, for the hope that children represent, survive. They may never be the reason why people keep the will to survive and rebuild.

You don't think MC/UC people have children for the same reason?

NP no. I wanted children because I thought I could give them a good life. If my life was unstable I would never have had kids.

This is how many people fool themselves. Life is unpredictable. Husbands die in traffic accidents during the last trimester. People with newborns get fired. Wars break out. Wildfires turn east.

The only way to ensure your children will never know instability is to ensure they are never born at all.

Why do people in public housing, on welfare have multiple kids with different fathers? They have no sense of future planning, no access to birth control etc. govt should offer free IUDs at multiple locations around the city. Anyone receiving social services should be required to attend a class on family planning.
