Is anyone here following the trial? |
This is why I stopped riding the NYC subway (unless I really have to) and use Citibike instead.
Nothing is done about these nutjobs riding the subway. Ridership has been down for a while, the MTA is struggling with a deluge of farebeaters, migrants selling candy and fruit on the platforms, homeless wrecks strung out in empty subway cars because it smells like #2.... The NYC subway normalizes uncivil public behavior. Behaving this way above ground attracts too much attention so the worst of them go underground. |
If you're a bystander, it's the right thing to do. Ideally, someone calls 911 and someone else records video. You've got to be organized in these situations, but of course, it's really hard to react sanely in the moment. |
A little bit. I've been following his GiveSendGo fundraiser though. It's over $3.1 million |
Wow! Is that all going towards legal fees? I’ve been following a little but it’s hard to tell how things are going. It sounds like the Medical Examiner gave very powerful testimony. The defense has had several character witnesses and a psychiatric consultant. Im kind of surprised the defense has not presented their own forensic specialist to refute the medical examiner’s testimony. I find it suspicious she had categorized the death as “inconclusive” until she saw the video. |
My husband is mentally ill, steep decline. We are a professional, middle class family. His illness has destroyed us, and there is little to no recourse in America. HIPAA and the rights for the mentally ill dont protect them, or families. He will probably end up living under a bridge and there is nothing we can do. We need the ability to treat people and for families to interact with mental health . We actually have the resources in our family, we just can't force him. |
That’s such an eye-opening perspective. Appreciate you sharing. |
Please call 311 next time as soon as you are safe to do so. There is a mental health intervention team they will transfer you to, they will send if someone is threatening to harm themselves or others. Your tax dollars pay for these employees. Make them earn their pay! Give a description and location. Yes, 9 times out of ten they probably won't locate the person. But often these folks stand on their favorite corner and rant and can be found. Interrupt the cycle as much as possible..You can do it anonymously. |
Ty for being kind. Ask me anything. We are in the middle of it, and it is hell. If you looked at us, you would never know. We shop at whole foods and have successful friends and I thought a happy life all that. Now we are pretty much in ruin because our foundation is just dry rot. It was a total surprise to me - this kind of psychic break can just... Happen. The weird thing is I've sat with my spouse and watched Netflix shows about people with multiple personalities etc. and he's nodded along, and I now know he himself has been delusional for some time. The mentally ill sometimes have zero awareness that they are in fact, mentally ill. Those with awareness are the impacted - their families..and there are HUGE barriers towards our interacting with the doctors. The process for guardianship or conservatorship an expensive nightmare, and not guaranteed to be successful. Mostly it will just bar him from future employment and tick him off. We will go there if he needs to be permanently institutionalized - right now we just want a diagnosis, which is apparently a lot to ask in this country. Literally all we want is to give some input to a psychiatrist because what he tells the doctors is his reality, which is false. Our country is well prepared to address outlier behaviors from a criminal perspective - my spouse has done some weird stuff I'm discovering like shoplift for no reason (again, highly successful)- but not to get mental health. And I am fully prepared to say that at this point, his getting arrested may be our best option as a family since there is no other mechanism.. |
Same girl same. We have spent over 200K on trying to get my addict sister help. She is a liar and a grifter and con artist. Violent and deceitful. It’s benzos and booze for her. So painful and awful. For Our family it might be better if she was killed by a bystander than have to continue to endure this pain. She steals from us, breaks in, cons our elderly parents and strangers and worse. There is no recourse because she is a middle aged fat pig. I support Daniel penny 100 percent. These situations escalate horribly fast. It’s sad for everyone. |
Same here- just read this comment. If my sister gets arrested or worse it will be for her own good. We are so ashamed of the pain she has caused both to our parents, our kids and to random strangers she has conned out of thousands to feed her addiction. She cannot hold down a job due to brain damage from her drug use and drives a car drunk and high annd opens any new credit card she can. She’s an absolute menace. It’s horrifying. |
I'm so sorry. My spouse is a con artist too. No addiction, just his mental illness has manifested in mind boggling acts of fraud, mainly towards the family. It sucks because he is hurting (he's sick) and hurting us. I feel you because I can't remember what he "was like". And then I look at a photo and almost gasp. It's like the mental illness I now see stamped on him physically. It has changed how he looks in so many ways, including the crafty, sly look that flashes in his eyes. Like a child stealing cookies. Gone is the breathtaking handsome capable man I married and planned to age with. All I see is someone actively hurting himself through self sabotage and taking us all down too. How do you walk by someone's side if they will literally destroy you in the process? And there is no way with our system to rationally, reasonably address this. I am disengaging rapidly. Its awful. Your sister sounds awful. Not your real sister, but this version of her. I'm so sorry. |
Such a horrible story.
This is the ultimate failure of liberal governance- and I say this as a liberal. For cities to work there has to be order. But we are treating normal people like sheep whose job is to be preyed on by the criminal and insane. |
The idea of all the harm they can do. Including to innocent people in their path. It's the stuff of nightmares. I wish we could just hospitalize people like this voluntarily or involuntary. Everything is so skewed . |
It truly is. There is some fantasy that protecting people right to "graze in the open air" is more important than lowering barriers to getting them treatment that would allow them to be productive and whole again. Cos it's more joyful to sit in your faeces on a park bench in the open air and be avoided by everyone except some paid social workers and the college students that drop you some change. |
