Should I report my neighbors for car tax evasion?

Why are you such an awful human OP?

You seem robotic, a$$hole like, and one track minded.

Do you have a microchip implanted in your head like Elon?

You definitely need to mind your own business UNLESS there is a child trafficker living next door to you and you have evidence of their child trafficking ways then please sit down and shut up.

We were investigated by the county but ultimately determined to be exempt from the tax due to active duty military status and a permanent residence outside the state. I will not ever forgive her for making a false report and putting that stress on me. I am determined to screw her in ways that are technically legal for the duration of my time here. I imagine others are similarly petty.

How do you know it was your neighbor who reported you?

She admitted it.

Yikes. Did she apologize? If she did, I would put away any thoughts of revenge. But I would tell her exactly how much administrative hassle that meant for me...

In general, I wouldn't "report" someone. I can't know all their circumstances, so I'd be afraid to end up in your neighbor's situation, and bring down trouble on innocent people.

She sure didn't.

My neighbors were military. one had Tennessee residency and the other had Oregon. Both cars had Oregon plates.

Oregon.... no sales tax. They used it for cars and major purchases (like kitchen appliances... which I learned most retailers in the area know how to handle.)
Tennessee... no income tax. So I guess one of them filed their personal taxes there.

I'm in a city with a huge army and Air Force presence. Yes they can keep voting, paying taxes, and registering their cars in another state but THEY HAVE TO HAVE CURRENT REGISTRATION FOR THE STATE THEY'RE REGISTERED IN.

One has a car with Wisconsin plates. One with California plates. I suppose they could be exempt but we live in Western Loudoun so I doubt they work on the Hill or are in the military.

I ended up behind the car with California plates today at a stop sign as we both pulled out of our driveways at the same time. The plates expired in June 2024.

I am normally a live and let live person, but tax avoidance costs everyone more. Would you report this if you were in my shoes? I am trying to decide…

Sheesh, many people live paycheck to paycheck. They probably can't afford the high Virginia car tax.

You don’t lose domicile in your home state by having expired tags. Yes, they should renew them, but it’s not tax evasion.

My home state doesn’t allow even active duty military to renew remotely. We have to drive two days each way to renew. Shoot me, but we’ve gone over expiration by a few months.

My daughter got waitlisted and it pissed me off to no end that her crappy classmate got a spot when mine didint. So I called the school (anonymously) and told on her.

UVA pulled back her offer. Mine never got in but I'm sure whoever did get off the waitlist was more deserving than her drunk classmate.

Good on you OP!

I bet the girl was prettier, more popular, and more athletic than your daughter, too.

Sounds like you’re mad that your spawn wasn’t even as good as some crappy teenage drunk.

Everyone shouldn't pay taxes if they don't want to.

There are a shocking number of people here who defend blatant stealing from their friends and neighbors, as a "MYOB" situation.

You need a life. It’s an issue their plates are expired but that’s none of your business. You don’t know these people. They likely aren’t students but I’m thinking about my kid, who will be driving out of state this summer and living in an off campus apartment for college. No, he is not changing residency or his plates. He’s a college kid. Hopefully the nosy neighbors don’t report him.

Explain how someone not paying the money grab personal property tax on their vehicle literally costs you more.
