Should I report my neighbors for car tax evasion?

If they’re students or their residency hasn’t changed they’re not required to. You sound very nosy and I was your neighbor and found out you did that we’d have an issue.

Don't be an idiot.

You don't call the police. You fill out the form that your jurisdiction provides for exactly this. In FFX, it is very easy -- just an online form that takes mere minutes to fill out.

Yeah, well, is your car properly registered? Then you won't "have an issue" at all. You wouldn't find out someone reported you anyway, you would just get a communication from your county and/or state telling you to register your vehicle and assessing you property tax.

And I bet OP has a pretty good sense of whether or not their neighbor is a "student," and it looks like the residency is pretty clear. But if the neighbor has a defense to not having registered their car -- then fine, let them bring it when the authorities contact them.

Yes! If you have cancer you do not have to pay taxes! Or register your car at all!

Sigh.

Several years ago I posted about a classmate of my daughter's that got arrested for drunk driving just after she had been accepted to UVA. My daughter got waitlisted and it pissed me off to no end that her crappy classmate got a spot when mine didint. So I called the school (anonymously) and told on her.

UVA pulled back her offer. Mine never got in but I'm sure whoever did get off the waitlist was more deserving than her drunk classmate.

Good on you OP!

I have zero problem with this.

Where in Virginia? If it's the city of Alexandria they won't do anything. But yeah you should report it why are we following the rules when others get a free pass?

Here you go OP. Report away.

If they have a valid reason for having expired (no, they don't because it's EXPIRED) out of state tags from two different states, no harm no foul.

i'm not OP but I'm in the DMV.

My neighbors were military. one had Tennessee residency and the other had Oregon. Both cars had Oregon plates.

Oregon.... no sales tax. They used it for cars and major purchases (like kitchen appliances... which I learned most retailers in the area know how to handle.)
Tennessee... no income tax. So I guess one of them filed their personal taxes there.

I hate tax cheats but I hate the idea of karmic blowback more. I'd say leave this one alone.

We were investigated by the county but ultimately determined to be exempt from the tax due to active duty military status and a permanent residence outside the state. I will not ever forgive her for making a false report and putting that stress on me. I am determined to screw her in ways that are technically legal for the duration of my time here. I imagine others are similarly petty.

How do you know it was your neighbor who reported you?

Military spouses can legally have different domiciles from their soldiers.

She admitted it.

I've had the opposite experience. Parking enforcement will come out within 24 hours and check out the vehicle and its registration.

I have zero issues reporting people who steal.
