For those of you interested in this topic, here is an opportunity for you.

A network news magazine program is working on a story about redshirting. The show has most angles of the story covered, but would like to discuss this issue with someone who has a four or five year old child who is attending school with a large number of children who are up to 2 years older as a result of redshirting. If you have a child in such a situation and would like to be interviewed on this topic, please contact me and I will forward your contact information to the program.

You can contact me by using the "Report" button on this message or by using the "contact" link in the upper right corner of the home page.

Maybe you should ask Jeff to check the OP's IP address to see whether it comes from a school.

It does come from a school and all of you who guessed have been wrong. Don't ask me which school though. That information will die with me.

Personally, I think the original poster has chosen a great method of obtaining honest feedback. Assuming the poster is familiar with this forum, it also shows significant intestinal fortitude.
Thanks for letting me know. A nightly backup runs between 1 and 2 am, but ended at 1:37 this morning. So, I don't think that was it. Beyond that, I can't think of any other maintenance that runs at that time. So, I'd guess that we got hit by some sort of spider at that time. When automatic programs crawl the site, they often make unusual requests that drive the memory usage up. Once memory is exhausted, all kinds of weird things happen. I try to track down the problematic requests and either fix or block them. So, I'll see what I can find in the logs.

Same old song. The Republicans will accuse the Democrats of hating the military and wanting to cut spending while our troops are in two wars. The Democrats will fold like a wet paper towel. The cream for the Republicans is that some Democrats will vote for cloture but against the bill meaning they are on both sides of the issue. They will then have to explain why they "were for it before they were against it".

From what I've read, they will only remove the defense cuts. The domestic cuts will still go through.
Anonymous wrote:i just don't see how longevity makes sense in this instance. are you becoming THAT much more efficient or productive because you have swept floors for 25 years? seriously, why do you pay that much more because of time-in-service? a new janitor should make the same amount.

Because, despite all Republican efforts to suggest otherwise, people are not disposable items that you throw away every couple of years.

What I'd like to know is why people like you latch on to an unrepresentative case and try to use it to prove a point. Just how many custodians do you think have lasted this many years on the job? Just how many have lasted that long in any position for that matter? This custodian is an outlier. As an example of the DC government's pay scale, he has almost no relevance. On the other hand, take a look at the salaries of the people hired by Michelle Rhee to run DCPS. There you would find outrageous salaries to be the norm rather than the exception.

Most new cars these days should have navigation as an option. However, in my opinion, navigation is one of the items on a car that is most likely to become obsolete. While you normally can update the maps, the updates are often expensive. Like any consumer electronics today, better and cheaper options are available the minute you buy one. This is especially an issue if you buy a used car like the previous poster suggested. In that case, you may be getting 3 or 4 year old equipment which will look like a museum piece 4 years from now. Personally, I think a better solution is an iPhone with a very high-quality mount. With that said, more and more the entertainment system is using a screen and, if you are going to have a big display screen in the middle of you dash anyway, you may as well use it for navigation as well.

There are three good reasons for a custodian in DC to make over $100K. One, he has worked in the job for 25 years. Two, DC has a very high cost of living ($250K is considered "middle class" on DCUM, so $100k is actually poor). Three, well, sorry, I can't think of the third one.
LOL! Anyone watching the Republican debate? Perry claimed that he would cut three Federal agencies. He named education and commerce, but when asked if he could name the third one, replied, "Sorry, I can't". Talk about not ready for primetime. Has there ever been a worst prepared candidate then this one?

The other high point of the night was Cain referring to Nancy Pelosi as "Princess Nancy". Just keep digging that hole Herman.

Huntsman must be beside himself wondering how he is trailing these clowns.

The only ward in which a Republican is currently running for Council is Ward 7. So, maybe they are all there.

She had the right to take her talents elsewhere, but in my opinion could have done it much more gracefully and with less trauma to the school.

I'm not noticing any trauma at the school. In hindsight, it's clear that Kim had been taking steps to raise Albright's profile even before school started this year. From my vantage point, the transition has been pretty seamless.

Are you a DC resident?
I'd like to ask again that posters not turn this discussion into a debate about medication. Please keep responses to the topic of the original post. The merits (or not) of drugs can be discussed in another thread. I will be removing further posts in this thread that are not relevant to the original post.
Anonymous wrote:The point is that this person's compensation is not within the normal market rate for a cleaning person.

If that was the point, the OP would have titled this thread "A District custodian makes over $100k". But, the OP chose to pick a person who is an anomaly and title this thread as if that person was the rule rather than the exception. So, the point was apparently to mislead in order to further an agenda.

Moreover, as the article states, this anomaly does not exist because of current policies, but because of polices from the Barry years. The article further states as these people who have been working since the early 1980s retire, they are being replaced by people making much lower salaries.

Marshall never held office himself, at least to my knowledge. But, he definitely played an important role in steering Kwame toward politics.
