New car question

So we are about to get a new car. We don't want to get a premium model, just the mid range. However, we really want navigation.

Has anyone ever had navigation installed as an option or aftermarket? I don't want one of those annoying little portable units that is always falling off the dashboard.

Navigation is pretty easy to install on newer models.

However, you are a fool to buy a new car. Get a used car coming off lease and save yourself $10,000 dollars.

Most new cars these days should have navigation as an option. However, in my opinion, navigation is one of the items on a car that is most likely to become obsolete. While you normally can update the maps, the updates are often expensive. Like any consumer electronics today, better and cheaper options are available the minute you buy one. This is especially an issue if you buy a used car like the previous poster suggested. In that case, you may be getting 3 or 4 year old equipment which will look like a museum piece 4 years from now. Personally, I think a better solution is an iPhone with a very high-quality mount. With that said, more and more the entertainment system is using a screen and, if you are going to have a big display screen in the middle of you dash anyway, you may as well use it for navigation as well.

Thank you, PP, for calling me a fool. I just meant new to us, not that it's any of your damn business.

Thanks, Jeff, for the actual technical advice.

I use my iPhone for that just fine. That is useless and the updates are expensive.

I love my GPS. With lifetime maps & traffic, I don't have to pay to update. Also, I like that I can take it in a friend's car if I need to.

The windshield mounts are pretty terrible, so I use a bean bag mount..

Then you are clearly not being called a fool (since you agree) and should feel good that someone thinks you are making such a wise decision. Why get upset?
