Um, all of you who keep calling Lochte's defenders racist do know that Ryan Lochte is 1/2 Cuban right (Cuban mom, white dad)? I assume you are going to tell me that it doesn't matter because he looks white, and therefore enjoys "white privilege." Is that how it works? I really want to understand when someone is a person of color and when he's not because, as far as I can tell, Lochte is a POC. His mother immigrated from Cuba, and she has discussed her Cuban heritage on many occasions, as has Ryan. So, I don't think we'd act differently if Ryan was Hispanic since, guess what, HE IS!!!!!

As for his sponsors, I agree that they suck. They may be able to get another Olympian and maybe another swimmer, but he's not going to look like Ryan Lochte. Plus, Lochte is the second most decorated U.S. Olympian of all time (next to Phelps), I believe. He's not just some swimmer.

And all those people calling him a liar, isn't is possible his memory was foggy because he was drunk? What's clear is he was in a taxi, it stopped, guys with guns who it appears showed some badges (according to witnesses) pointed guns in their direction. Eyewitness statements are completely unreliable when people are sober...when they've been drinking, partying all night, and don't have a super high IQ, no wonder some of the details got messed up.

Two points: even for official purposes we have whites who are Hispanic. Lochte's father is white and his mother is a light-skinned Hispanic. Anyone looking at Lochte would assume he is white without knowledge of his antecedents.

With regard to his "foggy memory" his interview when he said he had a gun to his head occurred about five hours after his return to the hotel. And even in his interview yesterday he refuses to acknowledge that he just plain lied and made up crap. Why is he doing this? He was trying to minimize the fall out but it did not work because he lost the sponsors.

As to the actual account of what happened his cab was never stopped with guys coming at them with guns. This was just crap that the sleazebag made up. Read the actual account of what happened.

Does he regret what he did? I doubt it other than for the financial impact it has had on him which is why I'd like to see him banned from competitive swimming just as a deterrent to others.

And why does all this POC business matter?

When I look at President Obama, based on his skin color and demeanor, I'd assume he's Kenyan, not US-bred AA. And I'd obviously be wrong.

Again, why does any of this matter to the fact of Lochte lying and making up a stupid story?

Lochte should face a lifetime ban not only for his lies and attempt to malign a foreign host nation but because he still will not candidly acknowledge that he was wrong. Yes, Americans - even white Americans (gasp) - are required to follow the law in a foreign country. Such a revolutionary concept ........

+1,000 Good grief. How is this hard to understand? Depressing that anyone has to spell this out.

You are both ridiculous.

He didn't cold cock his girlfriend
He didn't rape or murder anyone
He didn't brandish a gun
He didn't brutalize helpless animals
He didn't gamble on his sport
He didn't use steroids

He peed behind a building, tore down a poster, and embellished some details....

You people are ridiculous.

You are so right! After all, it was white guys peeing which is far more palatable than a black or Hispanic peeing ....... not to mention those Brazilians whose pee is definitely not palatable to Americans! There are, after all, different gradations of pee.

Yes, and he did embellish some details which is the right term when we are talking about whites ..... if it were a non-white we'd just call it lying!

Kobe Bryant is accused of sexual assault and goes on w/ his life, Michael Phelps gets two DUIs, but let's definitely stick it to Lochte for peeing in public and tearing a poster!

You've checked all the boxes of the ignorant American . You stupidly assume that because an individual hails from a Latin American country he/she must be brown . This clearly shows that you lack basic knowledge of Latin America and the various groups that populate it. Ryan lochte mother could've been from Argentina and you'd be peddling that dumb argument , meanwhile as much as 62% of Argentinians have Italian lineage as a result of the massive immigration of said Italians to that part of the world in the 19th and 20th century . You can be Cuban and be anthropologically Caucasian . Hell, I guarantee the bitter assholes who are defending him do so because when they see him , they see a white boy

I'm an neither ignorant nor am I stupid. I am well aware of the fact that there are Argentinians of Italian lineage, thank you very much. Do you know for a fact that Lochte's mother is anthropologically Caucasian? Or are you the ignorant one who is simply assuming that?

It matter because people on this board are claiming that the only reason Lochte is being defended is because he's white and that, if he were a POC (which, btw, he is) we wouldn't be coming to his defense.

I can not believe everyone just thinks nothing of these guys having guns drawn on them. These " security guards" were armed and saw an opportunity. Lochte shouldn't have been belligerent ( but plenty of people are aggressive drunks), this could have been a very different story, and dropped endorsements would have been the least of his family's problems. They could have been shipping his body home.

An opportunity? What to get about $80 for damage these guys caused?

You are right about one thing: it could have ended in tragedy which is why you don't go to a foreign country and behave like you have the right to do anything and not to have to face any consequences.

Because they did 80 American dollars worth of damage? No.

I hope you people jumping all over this very "non issue" all felt as much animosity toward Michael Vick, Ray Rice, or any of the other dozens of athletes that have commited actual felonies, that hurt actual people and animals.

Seriously. I have almost never seen this much outrage about an athlete's behavior. It's weirdly out of proportion. There are so many athletes who have committed just god awful crimes, but THIS is the one that gets people so upset? Just strange.

It is because you have an American going to a host country and not the slightest compunction in making up a lot of crap that disparages that country and its people.

I would feel the same way about a foreigner enjoying the hospitality of this country and being equally offensive.

But - and I say this based on personal experience - some Americans abroad are among the worst offenders in how they treat locals. I have seen Americans in foreign country getting offended because someone there does not speak English as if that is something that is expected. I have seen Americans using flash in a museum when there are signs specifically forbidding it and when it is brought to their attention they are just dismissive of the restriction. It just goes on and on ........

Lochte could not countenance a Brazilian having the audacity to challenge him.

But I'm not the one who raised race in the first place. It was all the PPs claiming that he is "white" and that's the only reason some of us are defending him. So, since they are the ones who attempted to use his whiteness to prove their claim, I think it's their burden to prove that he is white despite the fact that he is 1/2 Cuban (in other words, that his mother is anthropoligically Caucasian, as you put it). And since you are clearly just trying to pass the buck back to me, that tells me that you have absolutely ZERO evidence that Lochte and his mom are "white." So, please, stop running around calling people ignorant and stupid when you have no idea what you are talking about.

Maybe someone should tell Kim Kardashian she is not white but a POC even if she looks white.

Armenians are Indo-European and that is why you find there is variation in their skin color and features. And while we are at it can someone tell Fidel Castro that he is not white either.

I think you enjoy being dumb. I suggest you take a look at lochte mom and see how stupid your 'his mom is Cuban ' line looks. Again you keep insisting on the Cuban line and I made it clear to you that Cuban doesn't mean squat in this context, considering that you can be Caucasian and Cuban . You keep circling the wagons , the only person who doesn't know what he's talking about is you . You got caught with your hand in the ignorance jar and you've been on a back pedaling journey and boy, are you doing an abysmal job ? You brought the Cuban argument as a counter line to his whiteness and it fell flat . To be wrong is one thing , to be denial is even more disturbing . I can see how the lochte of this world came to be

For someone who made the claim that his mother is Cuban therefore he's a POC, you've yet to prove anything

Oh, so you're claiming that you can tell that she's anthropologically Caucasian by looking at her, and I'm the one who is dumb and ignorant? Right, because you can always tell someone's race/ethnicity by looking at them, of course! I haven't been proven wrong about anything. The only claim that's been proven wrong is that people are defending Lochte because he's white. No, people are defending Lochte because of the complete overreaction to what he did. We have athletes who commit serious crimes, and folks look the other way. But, for some reason, Lochte is getting crucified. It's inane, kind of like your claim that I am stupid.

They think that because Brazil is a third world country Americans can do whatever they want. Of course, if Lochte and his compatriots had been black or Hispanic these same people would be less inclined to spring to their defense.

Lochte should face a lifetime ban not only for his lies and attempt to malign a foreign host nation but because he still will not candidly acknowledge that he was wrong. Even in his latest interview, the jerk cannot bring himself to admit what he did and that is why I would like to see him banned from competitive swimming.

You could gain some credibility( not that you had any to begin with ) by giving the names of athletes who have had folks look away when they committed serious crimes . Does two wrongs make it right ?in your psychotic mind , yes. Lochte's mom is Cuban by nationality of origin ( which has to do with race ) and Caucasian by race . You ventured into uncharted waters and you lost badly . Ryan lochte wasn't in Brazil on a personal vacation , he was there for the Olympics and therefore representing this country and he failed terribly . Folks are not overreacting , they're rightfully incensed that your 32 yr old 'kid' brought international embarrassment to this country .By bringing up his mom Cuban heritage , you were inadvertently trying to say he's a POC and folks should let it go , thereby exposing your lower than low intellect . In lochte's defense , a combination of laissez-faire upbringing and having his head buried in water ( pun intended ) for so long might have rendered him an irreparably dumb jock . What's your excuse ? Go ahead and get back to your oral acrobatics and come back with an excuse , but remember one thing at 32 the 'kid' is toast . It's over, none of the illogical and trite crap that you spew here will change that .
