doesn't matter. If a driver is holding up traffic by driving too slowly, they'd get cited. |
In Va you have to be deliberately impeding the flow of traffic to get such a ticket. I doubt such a ticket to someone driving 20MPH in a 25MPH would ever hold up in court (how would you even prove it? Radar gun? Aren't those considered not that accurate, which is why people don't get tickets for going 5MPH OVER the speed limit?) And I doubt that police would give them. In the locality where I live, where police lack the resources to do adequate enforcement against speeders, red light runners, people making illegal turns, etc, etc, if the police were to spend their time giving tickets to people driving 20MPH in a 25MPH zone, I would think it would be a scandal. |
Not always possible in the city. The streets are narrower, there isn't a shoulder, there may be parked cars along the road. I do this on the highway or freeway when possible, but it's not always possible. |
Especially because speed limits are that low in residential neighborhoods. You're not going to get a ticket for driving 5 MPH or less below the speed limit if there are pedestrians around. You'd just tell the cop you saw a little kid and were being cautious. |
Yes! This is how I feel. OP is not the police so driving slower isn't going to anything to change the behavior. If the driver is always aggressive, it's highly likely they will be caught. It's all about punishing the driver behind them and claiming safety is BS. You are altering your behavior because you are mad. Someone beeps at me because my little 4 cylinder can't make the right turn in time, I don't wait longer to make the turn, I ignore it and do it as soon as it's safe, figuring they don't understand my lack of power. They zoom past when they can and I go about my day thinking little of it. |
Sounds like that is what OP was doing if people were honking at her. She wasn't just going 20 in a 25. |
This is not true of all places "further south". In Texas, honking is normal and is a way to ask people to pull over and let you pass. It is considered a totally routine, and not unfriendly, way of communicating with other drivers. In Georgia, everyone drives 25+ mph over the speed limit unless they are drunk, so it's not as prevalent there. Internationally, our custom of letting people impede the flow of traffic is not typical. In Germany, for example, OP might be ticketed based on the behavior he has described engaging in. |
Yup. OP is road raging in her special way that might get someone hurt in the future. Likely herself. |
Puhleez. Drivers are such aggressive a holes in DC. Of course they will honk for going a hair slower. |
Honk? The vast majority of the a-holes wouldn't honk for 20 in a 25. 5 mph lower is not that much different to even notice. OP impedes traffic in a more obvious way if people are frequently honking at her. |
IME, they will tailgate if you drive 25MPH in a 25MPH zone, so yeah, I could imagine them honking at someone doing 20. They don't want to drive the speed limit, they want to drive 10MPH over the limit, or more. |

if i'm exceeding the speed limit and you tailgate me, I will slow down and ensure that I have a very very safe stopping distance between me and the car in front of me.
i won't camp in the left lane if there are two lanes, i won't drive under the speed limit, but Like the op. flashing your high beams, honking your horn won't make me drive faster. traffic sucks around here for every one, and just because you feel special and didn't not plan you day properly, you don't have the right to be an asshole and drive like and idiot. Honestly, if everyone just drove the speed limit, we all would get to our destinations in a reasonable time. |
If more people took public transportation, walked, or biked we’d be in a much better place. But, we are Very Important and need to drive everywhere. |
I hate you |
Drive with some sense and you won’t have to. -OP |
