I drive slower when you beep your horn.

People generally drive the speed limit and pay real attention to stop signs. If they think the speed limit isn’t fast enough on a street with a 20 mph or 25 mph limit, they don’t honk they just try to pass you but even that is pretty rare. I think everyone is safer because of it.

You’re doing the right thing OP. Keep on ignoring the raging drivers. If you slow down slightly after they throw temper tantrums because you are following the law, I don’t see the problem with you making your own quiet point.

Wait. Who exactly is throwing a temper tantrum?

OP: “When you lean on your horn, I drive EVEN SLOWER. ”

I will be explicit if it helps. If someone is driving the speed limit and the person behind them starts honking or driving super closely to get them to drive unsafely, I think the overly-aggressive driver is the problem. If OP slows down a mph or two, I am happy to have him or her prove her point that being obnoxious on a road with stop signs and a 20-25 mph is not going to help the raging driver’s cause.

I feel like some of you are thinking about highway driving. I can’t believe that on a parent message board so many people are advocating for the speed demons on residential streets.

Law enforcement here, I would probably pull over the OP. Someone going overly slow like the OP, is usually a sign of day drinking or impaired driving.

Also, as a thought, do not ignore people signalling you with honking. Sometimes it is because they are rushing, but sometimes it is to alert you of danger, a flat tire, or other reasons.

Lastly, it's self absorbed to make the flow of traffic all about you. But, that is living in this area. Selfishness if pretty typical of drivers here.

Safe driving OP.

I drive slower after you arrogantly and obnoxiously beep your horn at me.

I drive the speed limit and come to a full stop at stop signs.

I do not care that you are in a rush and riding my tail.

I do let others walk completely across the street before I enter the crosswalk.

When you lean on your horn, I drive EVEN SLOWER.

Rant over.

Just a note OP, you realize that road rage is a real thing? I know you want to "prove a point" and good for you, I believe in safe driving. However, is it worth someone crashing into your car or worse because you want to "be right?"

It's very typical American to be right above all costs, but remember, the other person you are trying to piss off - wants to be right at all costs too. And that person maybe crazier than you (based on your post and all caps, doubtful, but possible). Don't risk injury or your life because of something so stupid.

THIS IS A TROLL

Police would never say anything even remotely close to this.

Carry on.

I think what happens to me is when someone beeps I slow down because I am not sure why they are beeping and I am trying to survey the surroundings to make sure there has not been an accident etc. If I am going above the speed limit and you are tailing me in the city in particular I have to slow down because if I need to make an abrupt stop then you will hit me. If we are on the highway I will try to get out of your way but city streets are not so roomy.

For the love of god I hope so. JFC, I defend cops all the time, but honestly if that’s an actual police officer, maybe they really are idiots.

I've seen more "safe drivers" in DC who are actually unsafe than aggressive drivers.
The "safe ones" are unable to pass another car when cars are parked on both side. They try to be "safe" and stop at 4-way stop sign and wait for other cars to get there in order to continue as if they were not going to stop.

If you are really worried about this, letting the person pass by pulling over completely would keep you most safe.

I don’t do that.

I just hate sanctimommies like OP on general principle.

If you weren't a d*ck ahole, people like OP wouldn't get under your skin.

OP it's much, much safer to go with a flow and rhythm of a road, rather than adhere strictly to a rule. You're not a good driver. You're an aggressive driver with anal retentiveness.

I can see that OP has really gotten to all the aggressive, selfish bad drivers we have around here.

LOL

+1 I would be worried the driver behind you is a loon with a gun. I saw an altercation on the freeway once, and almost honked at them to stop, then thought better of it. I just patiently stopped several feet behind them and let it play out. I was scared that I might be shot as an innocent bystander, though. This is what it's come to in this country.. when innocent people have to be afraid that someone loon out there has a gun.

I don't think that PP is a troll. Cops do pull over slow drivers who impede traffic.

I just have chosen to always think the best of people. If someone is honking and crazy behind me, I pull over and let them pass. You never know if they are rushing to the hospital, or their dickhead boss made them stay late and now they are paying $15 a minute they can't afford for overtime at day care. I've had times in my life where I've had to break the rules in an emergency (rushing to the pediatrician and rushing the cat to the vet) that I'm guessing those things happen to other people too. SO I can get all angry or I can assume something is up and be kind. If they are a selfish ass then they have to live their whole life that way and that's not a happy way to live so I win either way.
